2024 China Season Review According to a new ISS | Institutional Shareholder Services report, the number of share repurchase schemes proposed by companies in 2024 increased substantially as compared with previous years. The significant rise was triggered by the government’s encouragement of more frequent and consistent dividend distributions, as well as the inclusion of share repurchase spending as part of the calculation for cash dividends. Separately, the revised company law now accords shareholders individually or collectively holding 1 percent of total outstanding shares the right to submit shareholder proposals as well as file lawsuits for breaches of fiduciary duties by directors, supervisors, and senior executives at wholly owned subsidiaries. ❗️𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐡𝐢 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: 𝐔𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝❗️ European telecoms have been struggling with returns below the cost of capital for years, and the Draghi report highlights why. Europe’s fragmented telecom market has held back investment in critical infrastructure, especially in broadband networks. The report proposes a major shift: facilitating consolidation across the sector to drive investment and deliver a true EU-wide Single Market. This is crucial for scaling digital and decarbonized networks, harmonizing spectrum licensing, and streamlining cybersecurity regulations. A clear positive sign especially for M&A potential noting the lack of investment per capita versus other regions. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦: 1️⃣ Define telecom markets at the EU level to enable cross-border mergers. 2️⃣ Increase focus on innovation and investment in EU merger rules. 3️⃣ Harmonize spectrum licensing and auction processes across the EU to create scale. 4️⃣ Phase out older technologies and deregulate new infrastructure investments (e.g., 5G, fiber). 5️⃣ Support EU-based equipment providers for strategic autonomy. This bold vision sets the stage for significant regulatory reforms that could reshape the European telecom landscape, accelerating growth, competitiveness, and investment returns. However, reality still is that the process of drafting legal proposals, opening them up to consultation and finalising negotiations before adoption takes around 3 years on average #Telecom #EUCompetitiveness #DigitalTransformation #Consolidation #BroadbandInvestment #SpectrumHarmonization #TelecomInnovation #DraghiReport #SingleMarket https://lnkd.in/eMs2xGVc
