Something I’ve noticed post-pandemic is that we’re doing less community than before, and we’ve seen forms of community that have been problematic. Now community in the United States of America has been in a steady decline, as Robert Putnam notes in this video. It’s not a phenomenon that has exclusively happened in the last ten years, though we perhaps may notice it more. We could blame social media, or politics, or us vs. them thinking or AI, but certainly not pizza. Pizza makes everyone happy. And now the few pizza haters are after me. The point is we can ask ourselves a few questions: Can we build connection again, both with people who are similar and dissimilar to ourselves? Can we cast out fear of one another in order to connect in public settings again? How can we relate to one another better, and engage in ways that are respectful and beneficial to one another? I think many of us can agree that the ways we ought to treat one another are not reflected well on social media and other Internet platforms. Reminding ourselves of conduct pre-Internet, spending more time in non-Internet spaces, and interacting when we’re ready could go a long way towards building better community. That community can then multiply better behavior beyond its bounds. It is a movement from solitude to community and onward to service. And now that I’ve posted this, let me log off and enjoy some time outside the Internet.

Full transparency! In 2016, I became a charter school authorizer without knowing how to improve existing practices. Attending NACSA's Annual Conference in Georgia that year changed everything. Their sessions challenged old practices and sharpened my skills to promote equity and inclusion. Don't miss my chat with Veronica Brooks-Uy, NACSA Vice President, about her work on Diversifying the Profession: Closing the DEI in Authorizing. She's brilliant! #DiversityInclusion #EducationEquity #DEI #CharterSchools #Authorizing #CharterSchoolAuthorizing #HBCU #Authorizers #Podcast

To my mind Seth Godin has brilliantly summed up the stark differences between #Trump (fear mongering, hatred, lies) and #KamalaHarris (trust, cooperation, progress)... Kinds of power There’s the James Bond villian sort of power, based on division, dominance and destruction. This is the short-term power of bullies, trauma and mobs. And then there’s a more resilient form of power. This is power based on connection, discussion and metrics. A power based in reality over the long term. Divisive power tears things down. Resilient power builds things up. Resilient power creates the conditions for the community to produce value over time. Resilient power uses optimism and fairness to create value because participants can see ways they can participate and contribute. Fear might be for sale, but that doesn’t mean we have to buy it. Better is possible. #power #leadership #business #politics #community #principles #USA #elections
