🍁⚫️ Shot-hole borer crisis threatens Perth's tree canopy Hundreds of trees have been removed across the Perth region and hundreds more have been earmarked for removal under the Department of Primary Industry and Regional Development’s management of Polyphagous shot-hole borer. The department’s commitment to an eradication approach sees affected trees removed with the view to eliminating the pest. Local authorities, tree owners and other stakeholders suggest that more open communication is needed, and that alternative approaches should also be considered, as attempts at eradicating the pest have failed in other parts of the world. Arboriculture and urban tree management experts and community groups are concerned that tree losses could increase exponentially, with significant impact on Perth’s already low canopy cover, and that the pest might be more likely to escape to other states and territories if the current approach is sustained. It has been suggested that a broader approach founded on evidence-based science involving local trees is needed.
