Some interesting perspectives on the future of “modern tontines” (aka “products that resemble annuities”) yesterday in LifeAnnuitySpecialist (link below). It will be interesting to see what kind of growth these products receive in the future. As quoted in the article, I think tontines represent both an opportunity and a threat for insurers (i.e., traditional annuities). In the grand scheme of things, though, I hope tontines will “grow the pie” of retiree households using longevity-protected solutions, since these structures may represent a different point in terms of the income risk/return trade-off (I don’t really view it as a zero sum game between tontines and annuities). I think there are ways for tontines and annuities to co-exist in a single product structure, a concept called “protected modern tontines” that Gabriel Richards and I wrote about for the Alliance for Lifetime Income, which you can access here: https://lnkd.in/eAPRFQ3H LifeAnnuitySpecialist article: https://lnkd.in/gU659VbP

A "Rabbits to Human Workers" analogy seems not only uncanny, but relevant even now, so let's think between the lines and go down that comparison hole for a minute: How Long Do Wild Rabbits Live? The age a wild rabbit can live to will depend on each species. Just because some rabbits can live to around 9 years old doesn’t mean that all rabbits will live this long, yet time and again, nature gives us species outliers, and those always get noticed for standing out. 🐇 There will always be rabbits from each species that will defy the averages and live a lot longer than expected. These rabbits are the exception. The reality is that most wild rabbits will die as infants. That’s why rabbits will often have large litters and too many of them can create stress on resources, and they end up competing hard for a better, well-earned new opportunity in an overpopulated environment. They are aware most of those baby bunnies won’t survive. So when some die at least a few more will go on. In the long run, the species (or special individual characteristics in what can appear as that outlier rabbit) plays a huge part in how long a rabbit will last in the wild, and what "extra" bonus that longer tenure offers the warren around them. Some are proven to just "keep going". https://lnkd.in/gkHe4Fyb

📢 Exploring Retirement Planning with Moshe Arye Milevsky and Laurence Kotlikoff In a fascinating podcast, economist Moshe Milevsky of Schulich School of Business - York University dives into the nuances of retirement planning, particularly the roles of tontines and annuities in addressing longevity risk. Here are the key takeaways: Longevity Risk: Milevsky underscores the financial challenge of outliving one's assets and the importance of planning for unpredictable lifespans. Tontines vs. Annuities: Tontines: These pooled investment structures provide payouts based on group survival rates, offering a simpler and often more flexible alternative to traditional annuities. They remove the need for complex guarantees from insurers. Annuities: While effective at managing longevity risk, they can be costly due to insurance overhead and individual guarantees. Milevsky contrasts them with tontines as a potential cost-effective solution for retirement income. Behavioural Insights: Many retirees hesitate to buy annuities due to psychological barriers, such as the fear of "losing money" if they don't live long enough. Tontines may appeal as they lack this perception of "wasted" premiums. Policy & Market Potential: Milevsky advocates for broader adoption of both tontines and longevity annuities, suggesting that governments and financial institutions could innovate to make these options more accessible and appealing. This thought-provoking discussion challenges us to rethink retirement income strategies and consider innovative financial tools that address both longevity and psychological hurdles. 💡 Have a listen to the podcast via the link below and share your thoughts on how tools like tontines or annuities could fit into retirement planning and share your thoughts below! https://lnkd.in/eiKYMMNB #RetirementPlanning #LongevityRisk #Tontines #Annuities
