Imagine you are a chemistry/biochemistry student working for 14-16 hrs in the lab, optimizing protocols, establishing new processes, learning new techniques, and analyzing data. And then balancing Teaching Assistantship work and your own course studies. During summer, you spend all your time in the lab polishing your skills and trying to get reproducible data; only researchers of bioscience would be able to appreciate how tough it is to handle microorganisms, proteins, and biomolecules given that they are so sensitive. In this case, when can you expect an MS student to do an internship? Not all MS thesis projects will allow you time to do an internship. And then, when you graduate and look for entry-level jobs, you are required to have industry experience. I might not have industry experience, but I have spent hundreds of hours sharpening my laboratory skills. Will that not be considered at all? How to navigate this tough job market?

The HeadStart Fellowship is a completely FREE, virtual, school-year, cohort-based program that helps underrepresented and under-served students break into the lucrative fields of tech, finance, and consulting. I appreciate this breakdown of career goals, career path and career plan. You need all three.

Can we talk about job requirements for new grads for a second? First of all, if you are more than 6 months past your graduation you are normally not considered a "New Grad" anymore, even if you are still looking for your first position post-graduation. However, roles that are not tagged as "New Grad" typically require 2+ years of experience, so at 6 months you are neither "New Grad" nor experienced. So what are you? Then, I keep seeing roles with requirements like this: * At least 2 previous Software Engineering internships or equivalent work experience, with no more than 2 years of full-time work experience Not every student has the ability to do an internship and some jobs are requiring not one but TWO internships for a new grad role! Because I worked full-time while pursuing my degree so I would not have to take out student loans, I was not able to do an internship, which now puts me at a disadvantage compared to other students. I am not the only one struggling to find a job right now either. There are at least 10 other domestic students that I can name off the top of my head that are struggling and many more that I don't know personally. Each has a Master's Degree in Computer Science. The job market is tough, but adding these requirements makes it especially tough for new grads, so please try to consider why someone may not have had the opportunity to do an internship and look at their experience holistically instead! Want the absolute best advice you're ever going to get as a new grad or as a new #SoftwareEngineer looking to get a start in the industry? I got you. Invent time travel. That's it. That's the advice. I mean come on, how else would you get: - 27 years of relevant experience (or 22 years of relevant experience with a degree) - At least 40 years of relevant internship experience - A bare minimum of 237,038 references, with at least 10,300 of those VPs or higher - The ability to write a fully-functioning MVP for that startup as part of their interview process (in 1 week) - The time to apply to 10,000 jobs a week so that you'll get callbacks for those 1 or 2 - The time to get through the 437 interview steps for each of those 1 to 2 companies, all while still applying in case these two will fall through (they will) But anyway, congrats on entering the industry! Think of it as your dream job or role. Example: Software Developer in Seattle. 2️⃣ 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵: These are the actions you need to follow to reach your goal—aka how do you want to get there? Example: Earn a Computer Science degree → Complete internships → Secure entry-level positions → Pursue more advanced roles. 3️⃣ 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻: These are the actionable tasks you need to tackle to move forward. Example: Apply for internships at Seattle tech companies → Take advanced coding courses → Network at industry events → Update coding skills regularly. In an era where getting your resume or profile noticed can be a challenge, it was incredibly motivating when my resume was shortlisted for the Google Software Engineering Internship (Summer 2025). This gave me the reassurance that I’m on the right path. A big shout-out to Jincy Jiby and ANANT R A for their guidance throughout the process. There was a telephonic discussion, followed by technical interviews.While I didn’t make it this time, the experience was invaluable, and it has sparked a new phase of learning and exploration for me.
