As a mama of 3, this business I'm in is the ONLY job I would ever want to do. If you're like me, my heart can't handle leaving my kids for very long. And definitely not every day from 9-5. I can't imagine. Being a mom changed EVERYTHING for me. Covid did me favors as our first baby together was born during 2020. With my job that I had at that time, I was allowed to have my office hours at home (which was about half of the work day). I was thankful for my mother to watch her while I was out working but when I was home, I found I was much more productive with my work. I got everything done in half the amount of time because my sweet baby girl was there motivating me to spend more time with her. When we had to return to the office, I was NOT willing to do so. I had always felt valued as an employee and often received praise and recognition. I put it to the test. I asked to keep my office hours at home. The answer was no. I asked to go part time. The answer was no. My husband and I decided that being paid $19/hour was not worth being away from our 2 children (and we were expecting another baby)! I quit that job and was a stay at home mom for over a year. I absolutely loved it. What I didn't love? Living paycheck to paycheck, being unable to travel like I love, not saving or investing, and experiencing financial stress. I am SO THANKFUL that I trusted a couple that I met in college. A dad who quit his construction job to go full time. A stay at home mom that wanted more for her family. We related to them so much. Now, I can work as much or as little as I want. I can create my schedule around when their dad is home or their grandparents are available to help out. It takes a village. But you know what I have now and what is to come? -TIME FREEDOM -NEVER MISSING THE BIG MOMENTS -A FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE -AMAZING LEADERSHIP -HELPING OTHERS -PASSIVE INCOME and so much more!! Your company isn’t your family. Your boss isn’t your parent, and your colleagues aren’t your siblings. When you leave a job, most coworkers will move on, with only a few staying as friends. Keep things professional at work. Appreciate your relationships, but don’t let feelings get in the way. Ask for a raise when you’ve earned it, go for a promotion when you’re ready, and deal with any problems that come up. So, here’s how my first day back at work after my leave went… Hubby sent a surprise welcome-back package. 😀😍🤗 Inside were beautifully scented live flowers that filled my heart with their fragrance, and a lovely note. In that moment, I was reminded of just how crucial our relationships at home are to our overall well-being and success. Work can be challenging, but having a place where you’re truly understood and supported can make all the difference. It’s where we recharge, find peace, and gather the strength to keep moving forward. So, here’s a little advice: let’s invest in our relationships at home. Two weeks ago today, I left Manchester to move back home to Brighton, a life I wasn’t ready to leave behind. In life, we often cling to the things we love because they offer us safety, familiarity, comfort, and a place where we can truly be ourselves. We all have those places we call "home", and starting again can feel daunting because it means rebuilding your life from the ground up. But sometimes, we must walk away from the things that aren't good for us, even if it means starting over for the sake of our own happiness. This applies to life as well as to: 👉🏻 Workplaces 👉🏻 Friendships 👉🏻 Relationships 👉🏻 Enviroments Starting again doesn’t mean going backwards. It’s about who you become in the process of starting over. We all have 'work' to do on ourselves, and sometimes it takes certain situations to make us realise that moving on is what’s best for us, even if we don’t believe it at the time. Navigating the stage of life where you and your siblings become responsible for overseeing the wellbeing of your parents is very challenging and emotional. Years ago when my dad's Alzheimer's advanced and my mom could no longer be his full-time caregiver, we had to make some tough decisions. Selling their house in South Florida, moving them to Atlanta, and finding the right memory care facility for Dad became our sole focus. It was overwhelming for my siblings and me with so many moving parts, from researching facilities, dealing with realtors, to finding an apartment for Mom. For a while it was difficult to focus on anything else, especially work. The time I could dedicate to my job decreased significantly during this time, but I never worried about job security. This is where the value of being a high performer and leading an amazing team truly came in. Having spent years proving myself at my company, I had earned the trust and support of my boss and team. They stepped in to cover things and provide support without any hesitation while all of this was happening. This experience reaffirmed the importance of hard work, dedication, and building strong relationships within your workplace. When life throws you a curveball, having a supportive work environment makes all the difference. 𝗜 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝘆 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺. The one I'd been working towards for years. How could I quit? Didn't I care about my career?! Well - sometimes the hook isn't the whole story, is it? My husband and I both worked at the paper mill. At one point in our career, we went 6 months without 1 weekend together. I'd regularly be driving home after night shift and pass him on his way into work. We finally got on dayshift together when we moved... But if you're in 24/7 manufacturing.. you know. ➡️ Midnight calls a few nights a week. ➡️ Morning meetings at 7am, 45 minutes away. ➡️ Weekend duty every 6 weeks, but likely every other. Ok ok.. so throw a baby into the mix. Simple, right?? Flexibility in my role was not an option. So, my company offered me a less demanding, desk job. My options were: 1️⃣ continue in my dream job + hire live-in nanny for our baby 2️⃣ take the flexible job + be bored out of my damn mind 3️⃣ be a stay at home mom + struggle like hell with this new identity Ultimately, I chose option 3. This is all to say: when a parents take a baby break.. It doesn't mean they don't care about their career. It doesn't mean they don't have professional goals. It also doesn't mean it was a privileged decision. & if they come back? They're 100% MORE skilled than when they left. Trust me on this. These are tough transitions to make. I've been there. As I reflect on this milestone, I realize I didn’t spend as much time with him as I would have liked. Between building my career and traveling for work, I missed out on many moments. This realization brings home a vital point: 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭. What a few weeks it's been with family life going at 100mph! The last few days have been horrible though, with my little man being poorly. Thankfully today he has been more like himself and started eating again - if you know Rory, you'll know he loves his food! I have been feeling incredibly grateful that I run my own business and didn't have to juggle work, days off and looking after a poorly little toot! When I think back to the days of being employed, the last few weeks would have been incredibly stressful...do I have enough annual leave to take time off?...what passive aggressive comments will I have to deal with because I'm at home looking after my child?... who's going to attend meetings on my behalf?...why do I feel like I'm caught between a rock and a hard place?? Such a different outlook. Such different outcomes. The past few weeks have confirmed exactly why I now work for myself: ✅ flexibility of schedule ✅ my family come before work ✅ no glass ceiling ✅ no boss who tells you work comes before your children (yes it really happened) ✅ no mum guilt for being at work and missing events ✅ being present - not stressing about things I need to do elsewhere ✅ having energy to enjoy life! ✅ being in control of how I show up and who I work with. ✅ I can be me None of this came easily but it has all been worth it and I'd do it all again...just sooner!
