Has the disruption made us learn ? CrowdStrike has now taken a large number of those machines offline. The faulty code has led to global disruption with an economic impact that is as yet incalculable - but likely to be huge. The "Falcon Sensor" from crowdstrike which was product designed to protect Windows from malicious attacks is used widely on Mac and Linux systems as well as within more bespoke software for things like cash machines. But didn’t effect Apple or Linux . It was a NULL pointer from the memory unsafe C++ language, which was causing the blue screen of death. A computer can recover from a crash in non-privileged code by simply terminating the program, but not a system driver. When your computer crashes, 95% of the time it's because it's a crash in the system drivers. Microsoft needs to have better policies to roll back defective drivers and not just push risky updates to customers. Crowdstrike needs to put in code sanitization tools that will catch this kind of scenario automatically. My question is the human race ready to face such helplessness or this tech slavery will lead mankind and its businesses to halt time and again. Gartners risk talks about solar maximum and it effecting our power grids and frying our electronics. Are we ready or sleeping in a rosy dream shown by our vendors and startup’s. Have we surrendered to this fantasy that life is a problem which can be solved by an App or a website on cloud? Hasn’t these cloud, clouded our life enough .. Mankind needs to work on plan B too and mind it that’s not technology nor the solution lies in cyber but in life itself Overreliaance on technology is a risk to mankind atleast this outage has shown, corporates need to change their policies accordingly. #microsoft #crowdstrike #technology #bluescreen #cybersecurity #policy #cii #data #it #leadership #backup #innovation #publicpolicy #thoughtleader #ndtv #media #weekend #loss

THE WHOLE WORLD WENT DARK (Kinda) No internet? Cancelled flights? Hospitals on hold? A mysterious global IT outage plunged the world into chaos, leaving millions scrambling. But what ACTUALLY happened? Turns out, the culprit wasn't aliens or a rogue AI takeover. It all boils down to a faulty software update from a cybersecurity company called CrowdStrike. This update, meant to protect our computers, went rogue and instead infected millions of Microsoft Windows systems, basically the backbone of the tech world. The result? A domino effect of disruptions. So, are we doomed to the mercy of buggy updates? Not necessarily. But, just in case, it's a good reminder to be prepared for tech hiccups and maybe have a backup plan. But the BIG question remains: Was this a simple mistake, or a wake-up call for our over-reliance on tech? Follow Sahind Technologies for more. #tech #outage #microsoft #cloudstrike #news

Today's widespread IT outage serves as a stark reminder of how deeply intertwined our lives are with technology, which we expect to be seamlessly available around the clock. The impact hits close to home as I hear stories from friends and family who, like many, anticipated a typical Friday only to find themselves unable to complete everyday tasks—whether it's buying groceries, catching a flight, or accessing crucial healthcare services. This disruption, reportedly caused by a software update at cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike affecting Microsoft Windows devices, underscores the vulnerability we face in our modern, digitally reliant world. I am confident the globally community of technologists will emerge strong to be better prepared should such a thing happen again (because it will). #outage #Technology #strongertogether

The CrowdStrike Conundrum: When Regulation Meets Cybersecurity The global Windows outage of July 19, 2024, triggered by a faulty CrowdStrike update, has brought into sharp focus the complex interplay between market competition, regulatory mandates, and system security. This incident reveals a critical vulnerability in the current operating system ecosystem. Mandated by a 2009 EU antitrust ruling to grant kernel-level access to third-party security software, Microsoft has been operating in a regulatory environment that, while fostering competition, has inadvertently increased system risk. Kernel mode, offering privileged access to a system's core, is essential for deep security integration but also presents a significant point of failure. The CrowdStrike incident is a stark reminder of this trade-off. Microsoft has drawn a clear contrast between its position and Apple's. Since macOS Catalina in 2019, Apple has adopted a more restrictive approach, limiting kernel access for developers and relying on user-space system extensions. This model has enhanced security but has also curtailed developer freedom and potential innovation. The incident raises several critical questions: 1. Should the pursuit of market competition come at the expense of system security? 2. Can a balance be struck between fostering innovation and ensuring robust system protection? 3. Is there a middle ground between Apple's restrictive approach and Microsoft's more open position that can safeguard against catastrophic failures while still allowing for a competitive marketplace? The implications of this incident are profound. As our reliance on digital systems deepens, the consequences of software failures become increasingly severe. From economic disruption to critical infrastructure breakdowns, the stakes are high. It is imperative that policymakers, industry leaders, and cybersecurity experts work together to address this challenge. A comprehensive approach is needed to protect systems without stifling innovation. The future of technology may hinge on finding this delicate equilibrium. What's your take? Should regulators prioritise system security over market competition? Or is there a middle ground we have yet to explore? #Cybersecurity #TechRegulation #DigitalInnovation #MicrosoftVsEU

✍️So yesterday was a once in a lifetime moment where the tech Giant Microsoft went to Global outage......... 📚The reason -The reason behind the outage was not Microsoft . It was the CrowdStrike (one of the cybersecurity firms, who provides antivirus protection to Microsoft ) who deployed a faulty update to computers running the Windows Operating system. The file , named as C-00000291*.sys was the reason behind this outage . It contains a buggy code which was trying to access an invalid memory which created all of this chaos. The consequences⚠️ -The outage caused numerous devices using the Windows operating systems to crash, with millions of users seeing the so-called ‘blue screen of death’ on their systems.🖥️ - Many flights were cancelled and delayed , INDIAN AIRLINES like IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd) , airindiaflights and many others were affected creating chaos at airports.✈️ - Many stock exchange firms were affected, who were using Microsoft Services💹 - Many news channels and payment systems in other nations like Australia got disrupted.📰 - And 911 emergency Services in many States of US were also affected.🚑 🚀Now the issue has been resolved but caused the loss of billions of dollars💰 and many hours of time ⌚ The CEO of CrowdStrike apologized for this blunder and assured people that this was not a cyberattack or something.... #Crowdstrike #update #Microsoft #Outage #news #cyberattack #bug #windows #kernel #safe_mode #cybersecurity So, this was all the scenario , if you like the information share it with others ✍️ And as always Stay connected!! 😉 and keep hustling...........

Yesterday, millions, if not billions, of Windows Computers got futile around the world due to an update pushed by Enterprise Cyber Security Firm CrowdStrike, causing a widespread system failure across the globe. Its primary product Falcon, is used by a number of Fortune 500 companies, which provide end point protection using Artificial Intelligence and analytics to detect threats in real time. CrowdStrike’s Falcon Sensor, post installation, integrates with the operating system at a low level, often using kernel mode drivers. So basically, it is a third party software that sits in a critical path of a computer, meaning if it fails, the entire computer might fail. And that’s what exactly happened! Consequences of this outage were disastrous, leading to a sector-wide chaos; the shutting down of several airports, disruption of the London Stock Exchange, failure of several payment systems, and what not, causing a huge loss of business and outage of services across numerous sectors. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝘀. 𝗜𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲! Another thing I would like to point out is that many mega-corporations, instead of hiring a dedicated team of cyber-security engineers, rely on a third-party company like CrowdStrike, to secure their computer systems, giving them someone else to blame when their systems fail. What many fail to realize though is that giving one company the kernel access to the computer systems of most Fortune 500 companies might actually be a bad idea, and just uplifts the fragility of the new digital economy.
