Batik Painting with Singapore Cancer Society 2024 On 9 September 2024, GEAR was delighted to host some 31 cancer survivors over a Batik painting workshop and lunch at the Singapore Cancer Society’s Survivorship Centre in Woodlands. We were heartened by the overwhelming response with registration snapped up promptly within minutes of its opening. GEAR’s staff facilitated and assisted the participants who came early and participated eagerly, with many enjoying the new skill they picked up doing Batik painting for the first time in their lives. Many new friendships were formed over all the fun and laughter from the Batik painting and the sumptuous lunch. We were truly humbled by the courage of the participants who came out of their comfort zones to share their personal journey, some of whom who had overcame many painful ordeals and some who are still battling with cancer. This safe space created between GEAR and the participants was priceless, allowing deep, meaningful, inspiring and encouraging conversations which reminded us that no one is alone in this journey. Everyone’s heart was full as we ended with a birthday celebration for the July, August and September babies, celebrating life, counting all the blessings and victories thus far. In our commitment to forge long term meaningful relationships with our CSR partners, GEAR’s partnership with the Singapore Cancer Society has been going the second year running. We look forward to many more to come!

My friend Jackie Acho was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in February 2020 and until her passing in December 2022 she shared her journey through a series of beautifully written blog posts. She chose to compile her writing into a draft book before her passing, of which I was privileged to be her editor. The book, "Cancer Culture: Transforming the Landscape By Infusing Empathy," is being released today (please see below for an overview). More at www.cancerculturebook.com The printed book is available on Amazon at https://lnkd.in/gHFpPCHB and the eBook is available during launch week for $1.99. All proceeds from book sales will be donated to the Jackie Acho Fund for Empathetic Cancer Care and will be used to support others who are on a cancer journey. Book Overview This book is many things are once. It is a guide to: avoiding cancer; managing side effects and thriving during cancer treatment; complementary treatments that can supplement and make traditional Western treatments more effective; staying sane, alive, and positive during the journey; and facing the end of life with an open, positive frame of mind. How we prevent and treat cancer falls woefully short of what we need as humans. This book is a manifesto on rethinking cancer care to make it more effective and sheds light on how empathy is the compass we need to turn the situation around.

This week marks a deeply personal milestone—four years ago, our sweet Max was diagnosed with diffuse hemispheric glioma (brain cancer). The horror of that week—the uncertainty, the underwhelming survival odds, and the limited treatment options—will forever be etched in our hearts. Yet, amidst the pain, we are profoundly grateful for the 12 extraordinary years we had with Max, our “balls-to-the-wall” child who embraced every moment with joy, passion, and courage. As a young but well rooted partner in the brain cancer research and advocacy community, the foundation continues its mission with Max’s unwavering inspiration at the heart of our efforts. While researchers were initially unable to establish cell lines from his tumor tissue, Max’s donation is proving invaluable. His tissue is now part of the largest pediatric brain cancer tumor tissue array—a resource enabling groundbreaking insights into tumor evolution, biological markers, and potential treatment strategies. His tissue donation is also being used to train AI models, paving the way for transformative advancements. Conversations with researchers about these possibilities fill us with renewed hope for the life-changing breakthroughs just on the horizon. Max’s journey as a patient and our experiences as caregivers have led us to an intersection of profound humanity and cutting-edge innovation. Bridging these two worlds is both powerful and essential as we work tirelessly to move the needle forward. As we enter this season of giving, we humbly ask for your continued support. Help us honor Max’s grace and tenacity by fueling research and advocacy that bring hope to children and families facing the unimaginable. Together, we can create hope where there was none and carry forward Max’s legacy of strength, courage, and love. Amy Dowden’s story is a poignant reminder of how vital emotional and social support is during a cancer journey. The silence she experienced from some friends is, unfortunately, a reality for many who struggle with how to approach someone facing cancer. This post underscores the importance of creating compassionate, informed communities both at home and in the workplace. At Tree of Life, we recognize that support goes beyond medical treatment. Our Employee Vitality and Cancer Defense Program not only addresses physical well-being through nutrition, exercise, and stress management but also nurtures emotional resilience. This holistic approach helps employees navigate the various stages of cancer, from diagnosis to survivorship, while fostering a culture of empathy and understanding in the workplace. Working With Cancer thank you for sharing Amy’s story and shedding light on such an important topic. How can we better equip our workplaces to support colleagues facing serious health challenges? Last year Amy Dowden of Strictly Come Dancing fame was diagnosed with breast cancer, aged 32. Like people many who’ve had a cancer diagnosis and then underwent treatment, she soon discovered who among her friends and family were going to be there to support her through some of her toughest times. Amy shares an honest account in The Independent about her experience and the sadness she felt when friends who had attended her wedding the year before failed to reach out to her. Sadly, this is more common than many people might think and often it stems from people finding it difficult to talk about cancer and knowing how to best approach a conversation. There are some helpful pointers in the article from Robin Muir of cancer support charity Maggie's Centres. You can read the article in full via the link below. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eHrHsm44 #workingwithcancer #breastcancerawarenessmonth

As someone who deeply values the power of creative storytelling, I was truly moved by this new campaign from Breast Cancer Now. It’s a striking reminder of how design and messaging can make a profound impact on important issues like breast cancer awareness. This campaign by BMB Agency is not just about raising awareness; it’s about empowering people with the knowledge they need to take action. Creativity can drive change, and this work is a perfect example of that. Here's the article Congrats BMB Agency Team. #BreastCancerAwareness #CreativeCampaigns #DesignForChange

Honoring the Warriors: Commemorating Breast Cancer Victims and Celebrating Survivors October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we come together to honor those who have bravely battled breast cancer. It’s a month of reflection, remembrance, and celebration, where we recognize the strength of those who fought and continue to fight, and we remember those whose journeys ended too soon. Honoring the Brave Souls We’ve Lost Breast cancer has claimed the lives of countless loved ones, leaving behind memories and legacies that will never fade. These individuals fought with courage, often enduring treatments, surgeries, and the emotional toll of facing this disease. Today, we remember them with love and gratitude. They inspire us to push forward in the search for better treatments and a cure. Celebrating the Survivors Breast cancer survivors are a living testament to resilience and hope. Their stories of strength and perseverance remind us that, though the battle is tough, it is not impossible to win. Survivors show us that breast cancer doesn’t define a person’s life—it’s just a chapter in a story filled with triumph, growth, and love. The Importance of Early Detection and Support Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers, but with early detection, lives can be saved. Regular mammograms and self-exams play a crucial role in catching breast cancer in its early stages, offering the best chance for successful treatment. This month, let’s commit to spreading awareness about early detection, supporting ongoing research, and offering a helping hand to those in the fight. How You Can Make a Difference There are many ways to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Donate to breast cancer research foundations. Wear pink in support of the cause. Volunteer at local cancer organizations or events. Listen and support those going through treatment, and be an advocate for regular checkups and self-care. In Closing As we move through October, let’s remember that breast cancer is more than a statistic. It's about real people—mothers, daughters, sisters, friends—who have faced the unimaginable with courage. Let us honor the memory of those we've lost, celebrate the survivors, and continue to fight for a world where breast cancer no longer takes lives. Together, we are stronger, and together, we can make a difference. #october #breastcancer #honor #celebrate #fight
