#DevFestYYC 2024 Recap! GDGYYC | Calgary's Google Cloud Developer Group premier event! I missed some of the keynote speakers, but I had the chance to learn about Mob Programming from Susan Fung at SkipTheDishes. What Is Mob Programming? 🖥️ Team Collaboration: A small team works together on a single project in real time, sharing one computer. 🛠️ Role-Based Approach: Driver: Writes the code based on team input. Navigator: Guides the team’s direction, translating ideas into actionable instructions. 🤝 Expands on Pair Programming: Unlike pair programming (two people), mob programming involves the whole team, allowing for diverse input and creativity. 🔄 Real-Time Problem Solving and Implementation: When the entire team is involved, decisions, approvals, and implementation can happen immediately, speeding up the development process. A huge shoutout to Miraj Kumar and Sanghamitra Chakrabarty (PMP)®(CSM)®🏆🙌 for putting this event on my radar. Without you, I might still be Googling “What is DevFest?” 😆 . I have finally finished my 30-day coding challenge... This journey has been transformative, and now that it's over, I’m reflecting on everything I’ve learned and built. From creating a Markdown Editor styled with 98.css to designing a Windows 98 VSCode theme and countless other projects, coding every day has become such a rewarding habit. Year Up United has played a huge part in this journey, fueling my excitement for design and development. Whether I’m in class or coding late at night, each project has pushed me further and made me realize how much I can achieve. And the learning isn’t stopping here! I’ve also started my new newsletter, Code Tone, where I share my latest insights, resources, and projects every Monday. The response has been amazing—66 people have already subscribed, and I’m so grateful to everyone who’s joined! Next Monday’s issue is going to be packed with exciting updates and resources I can’t wait to share. This is just the start, and I’m looking forward to growing with all of you who’ve joined this journey with me.   This journey wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support from my classmates, teachers, coaches, and program managers at Year Up United. How I Won My First Hackathon Against All Odds Back in 2021, My university announced a speed programming Hackathon competition. As a coding enthusiast, I was excited to join. But there was a problem.   My friends weren't ready to participate. Why?  → Fear of losing?   → Lack of self-confidence?   → Fear of facing real-world challenges?  In the end, I could only find one classmate willing to team up. So there we were just 2 people against teams of 4. I almost gave up, but my coding teacher, Sir Usman Ghauri, motivated me to give it a shot. I still remember, it was Friday at 7 AM when My teammate Hannan Islam and I entered the competition hall. We were handed a 10+ page problem document and tasked with building a "Real-Time Text Compression" in C++. Despite facing a flood of bugs and a tight deadline, we didn’t stop. While other teams took breaks, we didn’t. When time was up, we hadn’t finished the task, but two other teams had. Our hopes of winning? Maybe 30%. But on the results day, to my surprise, our team "Twisted Pair" was announced as the winner! Surprised, right? Just like me? Lol. Here's how we won: Though we didn’t finish the project, our code was: → Free from errors   → Used best practices   → Optimized with fewer lines   → Efficient in both time and space complexity  We spent 50% of our time understanding the problem and prioritized "quality over quantity." Codeforces Debut: 2 Victories in My First 2 Hours! Hey everyone, I'm excited to share my experience diving headfirst into the world of competitive programming! Today marks my first foray into Codeforces, and let me tell you, it was a thrilling ride. In those initial 2 hours, I tackled 3 problems, and the feeling of conquering 2 of them was truly rewarding. Here's a quick breakdown of my journey: Problem 1: Theatre Square This problem involved calculating the minimum number of square flagstones needed to pave a rectangular Theatre Square. It was a classic application of divisibility and ceiling functions. I started by calculating the total area of the square (length x width). Then, I divided this area by the area of a single flagstone (side length squared). However, to account for any leftover space, I used the ceil function to round up the result, ensuring we had enough flagstones to cover the entire square. Problem 2: Spreadsheet This one was a bit more intricate. It involved converting between a cell reference (like "A1" or "AB25") and its corresponding numerical representation. I devised two functions for this: num_to_str: This function recursively converted a number to a cell reference by translating the remainder after division by 26 into a letter (A-Z) and appending it to the result of converting the quotient. str_to_num: This function iterated through the cell reference string and converted each character (A-Z) to its corresponding numerical value (1-26) to build the final integer representation. The Challenge and the Thrill While I was able to solve these two problems within the time limit, there was definitely a learning curve. It took some critical thinking and careful code implementation to ensure everything worked as expected. But the sense of accomplishment after a successful submission was absolutely invigorating! Looking Ahead This experience has definitely sparked my passion for competitive programming. Codeforces offers a fantastic platform to test my skills, learn from others, and continuously improve my problem-solving abilities. I'm eager to tackle more challenges, delve deeper into different algorithms and data structures, and hopefully, celebrate more victories along the way! That time when mob programming didn't work out at all. 😔 In a company, I was practicing mob programming with Team Y and a new initiative, and there had been a breakthrough in our dynamics. 💪 We were basically doing amazing, coming up with fundamental strategy, shipping features, and it all looked good as hell. 🕺🏼 What happened next? One member of the team moved temporarily to a different team, Team Z, to help them have a similar kickstart in a new project. 💡 A while later, I get a call from this member, saying "I'm trying to introduce mob programming to Team Z the same way you do it, but it's just not working. Can you help me?" Agreeing to join this other team, what I came across was a team with * Little psychological safety * Limited enthusiasm for the initiative * No "click" between teammates I joined that mob once (I was not able to spare enough time), and eventually the team was dismantled. Sometimes all that mob programming does is to reveal severe dysfunctions within the team sooner rather than later. 😔 After all, if we can't communicate well for 8 hours, how can we communicate well with a few hours of Scrum meetings? 🤯 This is where micromanagement usually comes in as the band-aid. ⛑️ Let's not just blame the ones doing micromanagers for trying to salvage what they can, but let's not thank them either. ... So when I get passionate skepticism about mob programming, internally I ask myself, is this because they subconsciously know that they'd end up as Team Z? Maybe? Or maybe not? (Full disclosure: I don't do mob programming in every team, and I don't judge for not doing it. It's just the way I've found to be simplest to move to the right goal in a team able to exercise it)
