"We believe in the power of second chances and the profound impact of giving back." This is part of what The Furgiving Foundation is all about. How did I find out about TFF? This is my first semester working as an adjunct professor of business affiliated with Lewis Clark State College (Lewiston, ID), instructing specifically via their Prison Ed program. As part of our Foundations of Management Theory course (Business 311), I work with incarcerated individuals across three facilities in Idaho. One of my students founded an incredible non-profit that trains and provides service dogs to those in need at no charge. He manages the training of the service dogs "on the inside." Overall, my experience with LCSC and the Prison Ed program has made me want to do more and continue educating here. As is often the case in the classroom--virtual or in-person--I've become a student, too. As tired as the old saw "the cloud is just someone else's computer" is -- I still hear smart people trot it out as a knock on cloud services. For a great illustration of how wrong this quote is, see: This news about Backblaze's CISO (Chief Information Security Officer, aka "Security Guru") being honored by the FBI. I guarantee you "someone else's computer" doesn't have Mark Potter and an army of folks working with him up at all hours sweating the small stuff to make sure every byte we store is safe. It's not someone else's computer, it's a data center that is overlooked by countless engineers and security staff hooked up to the nerve centers of the internet and run more efficiently, durably, and securely than anything "someone else" could ever maintain. When people talk about repatriating their data from the cloud to private clouds on-premise, these are the things they're not being honest about in the calculus of their savings. Sure, your cloud spend may be down... but what about your spend on security, energy consumption, facilities... and on and on? Either way, huge congrats to Mark.

It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve alongside my fellow board members in partnership with the FBI community outreach program coordinator to help further program goals through education and outreach initiatives. The FBI's Citizens Academy mission is to help foster a greater understanding of the role of federal law enforcement in the community through frank discussion and education. The FBI Baltimore Citizens Academy Alumni Association is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is separate and apart from the FBI.
