Here's the tl;dr: Get to the point. Instead of asking people to read a few hundred words, distill the key info up top. Unless you're on reddit, don't say tl;dr: "here's the short version," or "here's the most important info" are universally understood where tl;dr isn't. Here's the context. We received a letter from our family doctor. It was long. It detailed some new fees for things not covered by our universal healthcare (OHIP). It justified and explained these new fees with a little handwringing for good measure. The two-page letter offered a fee table, and a couple of options for patients: pay-per-use for services that aren't covered by provincial insurance or pay what amounts to an up-front annual subscription fee. The tl;dr might have looked something like this: Here's the short version: Not all services are covered by OHIP but providing these services has a real cost to our office. We're introducing new fees, inline with provincial guidelines, to cover the cost of providing these services. Patients can pay per service needed or pay a flat fee once per year. The details, fee tables, and context our valued patients need follow. When I first received this letter, I opened it, started to read, then put it aside. It was long and I was in tidy up mode, not decipher-a-wall-of-text mode. I got the sense it was important and contained information I needed to know but I wasn't in a place to stop and take it in at that moment. With a tl;dr, I would have taken away the key points. I might even have read on in that moment. People won't read everything. Not even when it's high-stakes. So get the important info out early. Don't bury the lede. And while I only have anecdotal evidence to support this claim, a tl;dr makes readers more—not less—likely to read on. So use a tl;dr which incidentally stands for "too long; didn't read." Perhaps I should have put that part up top...

Don't let prior authorization stress you out! 🤯 Understanding this process can save you time and money. 🏥 Key points to remember: >> It's a process insurance companies use to determine if a medical service is necessary. >> In-network providers usually handle this for you. >> Out-of-network providers might require you to submit paperwork directly. >> Provide complete information and communicate with your provider to streamline the process. >> Be persistent if your request is denied.
