Behind a paywall so can’t/won’t read it — but I’m guessing the #BigLaw “gain” from slow AI adoption is billable hours — and yes, that IS the problem. Fron the customer POV, when you pay by the hour for service, you buy hours not service. Time to move to #DeliveredValue E3 models based on Effectiveness, Efficiency & Experience
"What Does Big Law Stand to Gain From Slow AI Adoption?" by ALM What is the basis of the premise here of slow GenAI / #LLM adoption in large law firms? I have many conversations with #BigLaw firms and I see #LLM investment, money + time, that exceeds any other #LegalTech that I've seen in >3 decades. No one in those conversations suggests that a rate limiting factor is the billable hour model. Rather, the limits are identifying consistently useful practice use cases and output reliability. And those limits are not slowing down testing and trying new ideas. Also, a SKILLS.law survey in the Fall found a high percentage of firms experimenting with GenAI, including some #BigLaw firms testing multiple models. Other surveys have comparable findings. https://lnkd.in/eEzxtAnw

Legal is a buyer's market but the buyers don't know it. Corporate Legal Departments and other consumers of legal work from law firms don't understand that the change and the sense of urgency needs to come from the buyer side. Law firms have no incentive to change the pricing models because what they have been doing for decades keeps working. One of two things need to happen for the billable hour to lose its grip as the primary pricing structure for legal work. 1. PPEP and Revenue stagnate or crash for the next few years. (Spoiler Alert, both have only ever grown since the great recession!) 2. Clients push back and lead the charge or partnering with their law firms in finding better ways to value and price this work. Which option would you take?
