The Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee recently published a report which found that disabled people in the housing market had overwhelming barriers to accessible housing. To combat these challenges, they are campaigning for an increase in new accessible homes, as well as support to adapt existing homes for those with specific needs. Not only does the Committee want the minimum accessibility standards raised, but they are also calling for local authorities to be mandated to assess plans for where more accessible homes could be built. Genuine questions: - how come some London councils can find temporary housing closer than Stoke on Trent but others can't? - why do all attempts to create pan-London temporary accommodation procurement fail to even out this postcode lottery? - why does the reintroduction of housing inspections not also apply to homelessness and housing needs services?

Welcome to day nineteen of our "ABCs of Affordable Housing" series! Today, S stands for Section 8, a critical program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that provides rental assistance to low-income households. Section 8, also known as the Housing Choice Voucher Program, helps low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Participants can choose any housing that meets the requirements of the program, not limited to units located in subsidized housing projects. This flexibility allows recipients to find housing that best suits their needs, providing them with a significant measure of independence and choice. The program pays a housing subsidy directly to the landlord on behalf of the participating family, with the family paying the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program. This program is pivotal in promoting social mobility and economic stability by reducing the housing cost burden on low-income families, allowing them to allocate more resources to other essentials such as food, education, and healthcare. It also plays a key role in preventing homelessness and has been a lifeline for millions of families, especially during economic downturns. Latest housing data shows 151,630 children in temporary accommodation – the most since records began; an increase of 15% compared with the same time last year and the highest figure since this measure began in 2004. There were 117,450 households living in such conditions in England at the end of March, 74,530 of which included children, according to the latest figures from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. According to law, B&Bs are meant to be used only for families in an emergency, and for no longer than six weeks, but the figures showed 3,250 households with young people in England had been in such accommodation for longer. The figure for total households in temporary accommodation has increased each quarter for the past two years, and is up by 24% on the figure of 95,000 in early 2022. Meanwhile, separate figures from the Ministry of Justice showed bailiff repossessions as a result of a no-fault eviction had reached the highest level for six years. Landlords can apply for an accelerated possession order if their tenants have not left by the date specified in a section 21 notice. There were 2,916 such repossessions between April and June this year, an increase of 31% on the same period last year and the highest quarterly figure since the beginning of 2018. Housing ministry figures showed that 6,630 households in England were assessed by councils as being threatened with homelessness between January and March 2024 as a result of section 21 notices to end their tenancies – up 1.2% from the same quarter last year.
