It's real estate fact wednesday. The Wyckoff House or Pieter Claesen Wyckoff House has been standing since 1652, making it the oldest building in New York City. It was declared a National historic landmark in 1967. The house is now a museum. This article beautifully captures the fusion of art and life within domestic spaces, resonating deeply with my interest in creating flexible, modular living units that serve as residences and performing art venues. Integrating artistic expression into daily life—whether through intimate gatherings, curated exhibitions, or collaborative performances—aligns perfectly with my vision of adaptable spaces that inspire creativity and community. Seeing this growing trend of blurring the boundaries between living and exhibiting is visionary.

Accessibility is beautiful.
It has been almost a year since the high weight capacity gallery stools, my first big accessibility project, at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, became available to visitors. The response has been incredibly positive. We’ve even been contacted by museums in other states to commend Mia on offering more than one gallery stool option and to inquire where we purchased them. Given that this project took a year and a half to make a reality, it’s been so rewarding to see and hear the great feedback. One, of many, things I have learned about accessibility is that answers to barriers are rarely “one size fits all.” It’s about options and that is exactly what this project highlights so beautifully.

This MEND grant investment in Brighton is going to make such a difference. The Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND) is an open-access capital fund targeted at non-national Accredited museums and local authorities based in England to apply for funding to undertake vital infrastructure and urgent maintenance backlogs which are beyond the scope of day-to-day maintenance budgets. It has provided critical investment for museums up and down the country. As one museum director told me, ‘I didn’t come into this job to spend all my time moving buckets to catch the water coming in through the roof’. MEND investment doesn’t just fix buildings, it helps museum teams to do the work they really want to do - making a difference for the public. #funding #investment #capitalfunding #maintenance #museums #galleries

More on my work with the Fort Caspar Museum. This article is better than the first one I posted.
Oh look! Another article about my recent work with the Fort Caspar Museum (this one has a lot fewer mistakes!). Really excited about this opportunity for them--and looking forward to keeping an eye on their progress along the way. #consulting #newexhibits #westernhistory https://lnkd.in/g65Qdai9

I’m not an art man. But I am a culture man, and this exhibition made me think. Particularly about the challenges we face with placemaking and community-building. My posts here are mostly about the future of place… I try to remain positive but everyone can see the problems. The Francis Bacon exhibition inspired some thinking around it. His artwork explores the nature of ‘identity’ and the complexity that comes with it. This world leans to more digitalisation, simplicity and superficiality. Why are brands so shiny and artificial when they talk about community? True community embraces the raw, complex sides of humanity - even the parts we’d rather not see. It has to. For physical retail and the high street to survive we must build community spaces that feel real and inclusive. Less about the offering or fancy buildings. More about people. Another aspect of Bacon’s art which stood out to me was around solitude. It shows solitude is a necessary part of the human experience. Well-designed spaces should include quiet spots where people can enjoy solitude while staying connected to the community around them. Outside of expensive members clubs. True successful placemaking is about crafting environments that support the full, complex experiences of those who live in or visit them. Just a few thoughts from a non-art man, inspired by a brilliant exhibition.
