Why flexibility is essential for women creating a career in hospitality Achieving a satisfying career shouldn't come at the expense of your personal life, and doing so is becoming easier, says Laura Cherrington. As the third-largest private sector in the UK, hospitality and tourism has seen a rise in women entering the industry in recent years and they currently make up around 53.7% of the workforce, according to the latest research. While this is a positive improvement, there are still areas that require attention to ensure women feel they can strive for leadership roles. With this year's International Women's Day themed around ‘inspiring inclusion', it is important to look at the hospitality industry as a whole, and how it has developed over the years to encourage women to aim high. As the proud director of sales and marketing at Billesley Manor hotel in Stratford-Upon-Avon, I have experienced many of the same challenges (and successes) other women in similar positions have faced to get to where they are today. Despite an aspiration to pursue acting at an early age, I found myself drawn to the industry with my first role as a receptionist, before quickly rising to supervisor. Following the arrival of my first daughter, I swiftly returned to hospitality where I explored a reservationist role before finding my love for weddings and events. It was in orchestrating couples' dream days that I found joy – there's something magical about being part of such a significant moment in people's lives. After being a wedding co-ordinator for many years, I then took another break to have my second child. Again returning to hospitality, I was given the opportunity to work as a sales manager, where I played a key role in helping the hotel I worked with at the time to win ‘Hotel of the Year' in 2018. This was a huge achievement that I wouldn't have gained without the opportunities provided by the industry. Throughout my career, I've been driven by a desire to be proactive and to build and nurture relationships. The progression opportunities in this industry are endless, rewarding those who dare to climb the ladder and gain knowledge along the way. For me, the continuous growth opportunities have been both fulfilling and rewarding. Read More at : https://lnkd.in/evseT7Xd

April is Celebrate Diversity Month. It is a time to recognize, understand and amplify our differences while honoring our common humanity. Equity in the workplace is about giving every employee the necessary resources they need to have access to opportunities. And DEIA is just good business: ➡️ Companies employing an equal number of men and women manage to produce up to 41% higher revenue. (Clear Company) ➡️ 6.6% of all Fortune 500 companies have women as their CEOs. (Fortune) ➡️ Gender-diverse companies are 15% more likely to see higher financial returns. (McKinsey) In the workplace, it is important to recognize that all employees have different needs, backgrounds, and circumstances and address the imbalance of opportunities available to them. ----------------- In December 2019, Ann Mukherjee joined Pernod Ricard North America as Chairman & CEO. The first industry outsider and woman of color to assume the post, she has demonstrated from day one her ability to advance through ambiguity, while delivering both ROI and ROR (return on responsibility). She has cultivated a leadership style that is fresh, evolved, and modern. It’s one based on bringing your “whole self to work.” Diversity fosters creativity and innovation. It leads to new ideas, perspectives, and solutions. How are you focusing on equity in your organization? ---------- As certified members of WEConnect International and Canada's 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC), inclusion is at the heart of our business. This month, and always, we welcome everyone with respect and dignity. #DEIA #CelebrateDiversityMonth #DEI #WeNotMe #DiverseWorkPlaces #DiverseWorkplaces #EquityMatters #InclusiveLeadership #DiversityandInclusion #ThoughtLeadership

Yesterday, some of our team members proudly represented Element Fleet Management at the Catalyst Inc. Honours 2024 Conference, both in-person and virtually! 🎉 The event brought together Canada’s most influential business leaders and award-winning DEI&B champions, and it was inspiring to see how leaders are breaking barriers and fostering equitable workplaces across Canada. This experience celebrated the power of community, while also highlighting the ongoing opportunities to advance inclusivity. A few discussions that stood out to me in the panels I attended: - "The invisible load: women, aging and the caregiving conundrum." discussed the importance of perspective and having the conversations needed in the workplace to help women find balance while prioritizing what's important personally and professionally (workplaces that work for women). - When talking about reconciliation, going beyond our traditional networks to find, include and give a real voice to indigenous peoples is key and what will truly move the needle. - DEI&B is not only the right thing to do (inclusion should be owned, not earned), but has financial benefits and measurable impacts. According to a McKinsey report, corporations in the top quartile for gender diversity on executive teams are 25% more likely to have above-average profitability compared to those in the bottom quartile. There was so much more and I'm just thankful for having the chance of listening and learning a bit more about this fascinating topic that I often have the chance to feature as part of my social media work. 🌟 #CatalystHonours #TheCatalystEffect

"Stronger teams start with diverse leadership." “When we’re talking about diversity, it’s not a box to check. It is a reality that should be deeply felt and held and valued by all of us.” – Ava DuVernay Today, we’ll explore the diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiatives of various companies: Marriott International is a global hospitality leader with 30 brands and 8,000 properties in 139 countries, employing over 120,000 people. About 10% of their suppliers are women-owned businesses. More than half of their global workforce is female, and over half of their US leadership is diverse. David Marriott, Chairman of the Board, says, “We believe our leadership should reflect the diverse customers who stay in our hotels.” Mastercard has taken an impressive step by appointing a Chief Inclusion Officer, Randall M. Tucker, to focus on diversity and inclusion. Novartis also emphasizes D&I with Hannah Perry serving as the Chief Diversity & Culture Officer. Sodexo has prioritized gender balance for over 20 years. Women make up 60% of its board of directors, 29% of its executive committee, and over 55% of its staff. Sodexo offers inclusion training and has programs to support its diverse employees. Sophie says, “Gender balance boosts creativity and innovation, leading to better business results.” She also notes, “When women reach their full potential, both businesses and society become stronger and more successful.” Creating and contributing to a better and more inclusive workplace is one of my passions, especially given my HR background. I am actively seeking roles where I can effectively apply my skills and contribute to a company's success in this area. Stay tuned to this space for more such insights on Diversity and Inclusion practices. #DiversityAndInclusion #WorkplaceInclusion #GenderEquality #Leadership #WomenInLeadership #InclusiveWorkplace #DiversityMatters #GenderBalance #HR #CareerDevelopment #CorporateDiversity #InnovationThroughDiversity #Empowerment #BusinessSuccess #WorkplaceCulture #InclusionTraining

🌍✨ **Celebrating Global Diversity Awareness Month** ✨🌍 "There never were in the world two opinions alike, no more than two hairs or two grains; the most universal quality is diversity."- Michel de Montaigne As we embark on Global Diversity Awareness Month this October, I’d like to initiate a conversation about how we perceive diversity today and how we can elevate our understanding of this vital topic. It’s essential to shift our focus from mere numbers to the people behind them, moving beyond surface-level differences to appreciate the richness that comes from the diversity of thought. Each individual's unique perspective and experiences contribute to a vibrant tapestry of ideas, fostering creativity and innovation within our teams. Embracing the freedom to express your true self is not just a personal journey; it's essential for building a culture where everyone feels valued. When individuals can bring their authentic selves to work, we create an environment that thrives on collaboration and inclusivity. Today, how do we celebrate individualism and the unique qualities that each of us brings? Do we truly recognize that the inclusion of one person should never mean the exclusion of another? Have we got mechanisms to help us be a workplace that welcomes all voices, where differences are acknowledged and celebrated? Diversity isn't just a box to check—it's a powerful driver of engagement and success. When we harness the full potential of our diverse teams, we unlock innovative solutions and drive better outcomes for our organisations. Join me this October in advocating for a workplace culture that cherishes individuality, fosters inclusion, and empowers everyone to contribute their unique gifts. Together, we can create a future where diversity is celebrated and integrated into the fabric of our work lives. #DiversityAwarenessMonth #Inclusion #DiversityOfThought #CelebrateIndividuality #Leadership #HR #DEI #LeadershipbyAgata #HumanCulture #HumanCultureLab

Another great session during AHRI DEI Week 2024 - Driving Impact: Key Elements of Effective DEI Strategies. Thank you Alison Woolsey, Michelle Phipps, Michelle Lim 林敏诗, Roman Ružbacký and Marnie King for an engaging, insightful and valuable session. Key takeaways: 💡Senior leader discussions – demonstrate a thorough and evidence based understanding of your organisation’s context, how DEI is relevant and use a maturity model to explore DEI and ROI for your organisation (eg AHRI DEI maturity model) 💡Approach - Centre on lived experiences, explore structural and systemic barriers, build DEI literacy, create common language, take an intersectionality approach and support people with the “how” 💡Measurement - behind each number is a human experience and story, understand your context for measures, build data literacy, and ensure safety and rationale for collecting data, use external benchmark tools to assess maturity in key focus areas 💡Compliance - all organisations need to be compliant with legislation so use it to build cultural change (eg positive duty) and use external reporting for authentic storytelling 💡DEI and ethics: DEI is an ethical imperative (eg human rights, justice, fairness, respect) and is reinforced by the ASX Corporate Governance Guidelines (Principle 3: Instil a culture of acting lawfully, ethically and responsibly), uncover unspoken values that drive workplace culture that can enable or disable initiatives 💡Employee networks – assign senior leadership sponsors to enable voice, prioritisation, advocacy, funding, raising issues and opportunities 💡Allyship - earned through showing up, giving power to others, clearing paths of resistance, understanding your relationship to power and influence and being vulnerable
