Georgia applied for EU membership in March 2022, shortly after ru*sia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and was granted candidate status in December 2023. In May 2024, Georgia’s parliament passed a “foreign agents” law, prompting mass protests due to concerns over its impact on civil society and media freedom. The protesters were dispersed. The #EU criticized the law, stating it hindered Georgia’s integration efforts. The United #States initiated a comprehensive review of bilateral cooperation with Georgia, citing the suppression of democratic freedoms. On November 28, 2024, pro-🇷🇺 Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that the government would suspend EU accession negotiations and decline EU budgetary assistance until 2028, citing perceived “blackmail and manipulation” from EU politicians. It plays a critical role in supporting Ukraine's war effort, hosting NATO troops and facilitating military logistics. Presidential Stakes: The December election was pivotal, with nationalist Calin Georgescu, opposing NATO and U.S. influence, leading after the first round with 23%, ahead of pro-NATO Elena Lasconi at 19%. Election Halted On December 6, two days before the decisive vote, the Court annulled the election, citing Russian meddling via TikTok. This dubious claim triggered raids against Georgescu's supporters and raised suspicions of political weaponization of legal tools to suppress dissent. Weaponizing Legal Processes The Court's argument—Russian TikTok trolls influenced voters—is reminiscent of conspiracy theories but was used to justify canceling an election. Such tactics echo past scenarios where legal pretexts were used to disqualify political opponents under the guise of protecting democracy. Broader Implications The vague specter of "Russian interference" has become a convenient tool to stifle opposition, with little need for evidence.
