Having returned from SaaStr and having had the privilege of listening to some SaaS financial experts I think it is harder than ever for founders to understand what and why they are measuring certain metrics. In a "grow at all costs" era it is easy enough right? MRR, growth rate, new user acquisition rate... So long as you are growing your user base its all good. In our current era of "efficiency and EBITDA" we need to be focussing on metrics that may have previously been pushed to the background. One example that came up at SaaStr was if we are focussing on protecting and expanding our current customer base- "how do we measure "CAC" on expansion activities?" There was vigourous debate on measuring how much time your reps are spending on existing business vs new, system usage, time and effort etc. This can quickly become overwhelming for a new founder who is just trying to figure out which numbers they can actually gain insight from vs those that are just needed for reporting. We need to get back to the philosophy of metrics. Why are we collecting this data? When we read it, so what? How can I use this to drive insights? Don't get hung up on the input, focus on the insight and outcome you are seeking. Often when I meet with clients and they are hellbent on pulling out a particular segment or calculating a metric a certain way that we can't accommodate, it just takes a few questions to get to the outcome they are looking for not necessarily the input. I encourage founders to do the same. It is great to come in with an idea of the metrics you want to measure but if you find yourself frustrated not being able to calculate it effectively, step back, review the outcome you are trying to achieve and you may just find a better way to gain the insight you need. At worst, pick something, even if it is not the most accurate or trusted, pick something that can be consistently measured and experimented against, work on accuracy over time. Today we reported Elastic’s Q3 earnings results. We delivered another strong quarter in our fiscal Q3 and raised our outlook for the year. I’m excited about the opportunities ahead, especially in the area of #GenerativeAI. Three main takeaways from our earnings report: First, customer interest in Generative AI remains strong, and as customers start to build Generative AI applications, they are increasingly able to appreciate the advantages of Elastic’s platform relative to pure play vector database vendors. Second, we saw continued momentum in platform consolidation as customers chose the Elasticsearch platform to displace incumbent solutions for multiple use cases, especially in Log Analytics and SIEM. Lastly, we saw continued stability in cloud consumption patterns as customers increased their consumption against their previous commitments. Thanks to the entire Elastic team, our customers, partners, and community members for supporting us steadfastly through our continued success.
