They returned inspired and equipped with valuable insights to share! One of the key focuses of the event was the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modern business. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 𝟭. 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁: AI systems require carefully designed inputs to perform optimally. Depending on the input, they can exhibit friendliness, humor, or even creativity. A fascinating example: an airline AI programmed to be extra friendly began offering free rebookings! This highlights the critical need for deliberate input design. Fun fact: have you considered liability insurance for your AI? It’s a thing!💡 𝟮. 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼𝘀: AI can generate voices and videos with astonishing accuracy. However, these advancements come with risks, particularly in personal contexts. For example, setting a family safeword could protect against scammers misusing this technology. 🔒 𝟯. 𝗔𝗜 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗔𝗤𝘀: Why rely on traditional website FAQs? A well-trained AI chatbot can provide instant answers, enhancing user experience while saving time and resources. 💬 𝟰. 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Did you know that nearly 50% of the global population plays video or mobile games occasionally? Gaming isn’t just entertainment—it enhances spatial awareness, strategic thinking, and hand-eye coordination. Businesses are leveraging these benefits in recruitment by creating virtual company tours and using games to assess candidates’ skills. Virtual environments also allow organizations to digitally model large objects, helping to identify ergonomics issues, bottlenecks, and weaknesses. AI and Virtual Reality are enabling story-driven transformation processes through avatars and role-playing scenarios. 🎮 𝟱. 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜: While AI is a powerful tool for data analysis and pattern recognition, it falls short in areas like emotional intelligence, creative thinking, and ethical responsibility. AI applications are socio-technical systems with a significant impact on stakeholder values. Ethical approaches to AI tend to ignore the local context of specific applications, leaving them too abstract to be of practical use. Technical approaches to control AI applications often have the opposite problem of ignoring stakeholder values. To bridge this gap, we’re designing a solution that draws from concepts in design for values, system safety, and ESG accounting. Last Wednesday, I had the opportunity to present our ongoing research paper, co-authored by Roel Dobbe and Sander Renes during the poster session at EGOV2024 - IFIP EGOV-CeDEM-EPART 2024. The session was valuable as it helped us improve and refine the design of a repeatable process to identify values and integrate these values into practical organisational controls in the context of specific AI applications.
