Another ADB SAFEGATE approach sequential flashing system ready for the field!  😊 Have you ever wondered how these flashing signals enhance safety during landing?  🤔 As per the International Civil Aviation Organization:  ➡ Sequential approach flashing systems are recommended as supplement for simple and barrette-type approaches in the case of difficult approaches.  ➡ RTILs are recommended when it is necessary to add conspicuity to the threshold: for example, with non-precision runways without other approach visual aids, or when the threshold is displaced. The impression of movement induced by the high-luminosity flashes towards the threshold allows pilots to better identify the centreline axis, particularly in adverse weather conditions.  🔦 Here are some key distinctions in ICAO sequenced flashing layouts to consider:  1️⃣ CAT I: 900-Meter to Threshold Installation. It is recommended to install flashing lights, over the whole 900 meters approach distance, from the runway threshold.   2️⃣ CAT II/III: From 900 Meters to 300 Meters from Threshold. It is recommended to use flashing lights from 900 meters to 300 meters from the runway threshold only. This measure aims to avoid blinding pilots with an excess of light through fog.  3️⃣ Runway Threshold Identification Lights: the RTILs system involves flashing lights located at the outside extremities of runway threshold to increase the conspicuity of the runway threshold. For us airfield electrical engineers, let’s remember that the electrical circuit of flashing lights must be designed to allow independent operation from other segments in the approach lighting system. 💡 Specificity: As per the ICAO Annex 14, the lights located on the centreline in barrette-type CAT I/II/III approach should flash twice per second, while for RTILS, it can be once or twice per second. #maintenance #AGL #ICAO #ADB #SAFEGATE #flashing #operation #airfield #approach #lighting

The current procedure for classifying the capacity of airport pavements, known as the Aircraft Classification Number/Pavement Classification Number (ACN/PCN) method, implemented about 40 years ago, has not followed the evolution of mechanistic-empirical design methods. In this sense, this paper aims to present a comparative analysis between the ACN/PCN Method and what will be implemented by the International Civil Aviation Organization by 2024, the Aircraft Classification Rating/Pavement Classification Rating (ACR/PCR) method, to verify the impacts on the useful life and the admissibility of landing and take-off operations. Therefore, two flexible surface runways, located in Brazil, were evaluated with the help of COMFAA 3.0 and FAARFIELD 2.0 software. It was found that flexible pavements governed by the ACN/PCN method provide structures with reduced durability, both for the subgrade and the surface; on the other hand, when governed by the ACR/PCR Method, the subgrade has a useful life close to the project life and the surfaces have durability of more than 10 years, which may change the admissibility of landing and take-off operations. Furthermore, based on the results of these two pavements, it is suggested that the overload acceptance criteria for the ACR/PCR method be reviewed and adjusted according to the aircraft’s landing gear configuration. As we continue our Railway Safety Awareness Campaign, today we will speak about Rail control systems are the unsung heroes of the railway industry, silently ensuring the safe and efficient movement of trains. Today, we delve into three prominent systems: Automatic Train Control (ATC), Automatic Train Stop (ATS), and Automatic Train Supervision (ATS). Automatic Train Control (ATC): Imagine a virtual co-pilot for your train. ATC is a sophisticated system that continuously monitors a train's speed and ensures it adheres to predefined limits. It uses trackside signals and onboard equipment to communicate and automatically regulate speed. Think of it as a guardrail, preventing trains from exceeding safe limits. Automatic Train Stop (ATS): A stricter cousin of ATC, ATS enforces speed restrictions. If a train approaches a red signal or exceeds the designated speed, ATS brings the train to a complete halt, prioritizing safety above all else. Automatic Train Supervision (ATS): This system acts as the traffic conductor for the railway network. ATS tracks train locations, monitors their speed, and manages traffic flow in real-time. It provides dispatchers with a comprehensive overview of the network, enabling them to optimize train movements and maintain a safe distance between trains. These systems work together seamlessly, like a well-oiled machine. ATC continuously monitors speed, ATS intervenes if necessary, and ATS supervises the entire operation. The result? Governor Moore Announces $1.7 Million in Federal Funding for Eastern Shore Drone Pilot Program to Improve Access to Health Care Resources ANNAPOLIS, MD – Governor Wes Moore today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the Maryland Department of Planning a $1.76 million SMART grant to pilot the use of innovative aviation technology. The program will focus on improving access to healthcare resources in rural communities on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. “All Marylanders deserve equitable access to health care and health care resources,” said Gov. Moore. “This funding will strengthen our capacity to support our rural communities and presents an important opportunity to learn more about how enhanced technology can be deployed to serve those in need.” Uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) are one of several means to help address poor health outcomes that are linked to lack of transportation for obtaining medical services. The systems can also help reduce the hours that healthcare provider staff absorb by travel to ensure that homebound patients are served. The Eastern Shore pilot will deliver medical packages between Crisfield and Smith Island, which is home to several hundred residents who are linked to the mainland only by commercially-operated boat services. Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation—also known as SMART— grants fund state, local, and Tribal governments to conduct demonstration projects. The projects are focused on advanced smart city or community technologies and systems to improve transportation efficiency and safety. The program is structured in two stages. Applicants first seek Stage 1 planning and prototyping grants. Select projects are then eligible to apply for Stage 2 implementation grants. Stage 1 grants are capped at $2 million and an 18-month period and Stage 2 grants are anticipated to be up to $15 million and 36 months. The Maryland Department of Planning will serve as the grant manager; the University of Maryland UAS Research and Operations Center will serve as project manager and technical lead; and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Aviation Science Program and School of Pharmacy will be partners in the project. A commercial drone services provider will be selected to participate in all aspects of technical preparation, to obtain necessary Federal Aviation Administration permissions, and to perform flight operations. A local health care provider will assist in coordinating the medical and pharmaceutical delivery support. It’s one of Europe's largest new infrastructure projects, set to plug a major gap in the continent’s high-speed rail network. The $8BN Rail Baltica project will connect the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The planned 870 km #railway will operate four high-speed trains covering the entire distance between Tallinn and Kaunas or Vilnius in just over three and a half hours. IDOM designed 389 km of the Baltic corridor and implemented a connected data environment allowing teams to collaborate via 3D models and detect clashes during design. Using digital technologies allowed multiple organizations to work seamlessly and access real-time data to minimize errors.
