What books have you enjoyed this summer? I’ve gleaned a lot from William Ury’s newly released, "How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict". Ury, whose book "Getting to Yes" has been read by countless lawyers, negotiators and mediators, sums up his learning from four and a half decades of helping resolve the world's most intractable conflicts, from aspects of the Cold War to Kentucky coal mines to ending civil wars. He summarizes his approach to uncovering solutions for seemingly unsolvable disputes essentially as follows: 1. "Go to the balcony", meaning find a way to gain perspective and self-control; 2. Build a "golden bridge" by finding solutions that meet mutual needs; 3. "Engage the third side", meaning find support from a broader community or common purpose to foster a sense of shared identity. The book is full of examples from Ury's own career and life, and is written in a way that is enjoyable to read. So much so that my dog took a look as well...
