Remember, friends, kindness is key to resilience. 🤖🫶 We loved reading a recent piece in The New York Times on author, illustrator, and long-time High Line visitor (!) Peter Brown, who shared how the wild landscape of the High Line inspired the creation of his best-selling books, "The Wild Robot" and "The Curious Garden." With over 4.6 million copies sold globally, two sequels, and a movie adaptation, "The Wild Robot" has touched the hearts of readers and moviegoers everywhere with its prescient themes of friendship, connection, and wild-ness. “[The High Line is] about nature existing in an unlikely place, which got me thinking about the inverse: something unnatural existing in a natural place," said Brown. Peter, we feel lucky that the High Line has been able to serve as a source of inspiration throughout your career and for your readers. And to our fellow dreamers—we hope our park can continue to be a place for your creativity and curiosity to flourish. 🌿: https://lnkd.in/ebJazTQY 📷: Graham Dickie/The New York Times

What books have you enjoyed this summer? I’ve gleaned a lot from William Ury’s newly released, "How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict". Ury, whose book "Getting to Yes" has been read by countless lawyers, negotiators and mediators, sums up his learning from four and a half decades of helping resolve the world's most intractable conflicts, from aspects of the Cold War to Kentucky coal mines to ending civil wars. He summarizes his approach to uncovering solutions for seemingly unsolvable disputes essentially as follows: 1. "Go to the balcony", meaning find a way to gain perspective and self-control; 2. Build a "golden bridge" by finding solutions that meet mutual needs; 3. "Engage the third side", meaning find support from a broader community or common purpose to foster a sense of shared identity. The book is full of examples from Ury's own career and life, and is written in a way that is enjoyable to read. So much so that my dog took a look as well... Hope you all are having a good summer - and would love to know what books have been inspiring to you.

It was a joy to talk about the wisdom of uncertainty in writing and in life w/ Amy L. Bernstein for her incisive Doubt Monster substack! Thank you, Amy, for underscoring uncertainty's critical importance to the future of humanity. Unless we learn to skillfully be unsure, we can't solve the mounting complex problems of our day. That's sobering, but Uncertain is a book filled with strategies, stories, and hope. https://lnkd.in/dUkjXzXE

How good are you at identifying what you're feeling and why? Emotional intelligence wasn't a skill that I was taught as a kid, but Brené Brown's book Atlas of the Heart is helping to fill in the gaps in my language and in my understanding. In this video I sketch out the book's approach and share a few of the emotional landscapes that Brown maps out for us. https://lnkd.in/gXiXp3Qc

** BLATANT SELF-PROMOTION WARNING ** I wrote a book! Just like a million other people, I have had "writing a novel" on my bucket list since I was in my 20's. Well, in the depths of last winter, I decided it was time to give it a try. It took 6 months of effort. It needed pages and pages of comments from four different editors (and still could use four more). But is done. Many lessons learned. On to the next one! #AuthorLife #BookLaunch #WritingCommunity #FirstNovel #PublishingJourney

Hollow Kingdom "The Secret Life of Pets meets The Walking Dead" in this big-hearted, boundlessly beautiful romp through the Apocalypse and the world that comes after, where a foul-mouthed crow is humanity's only chance to survive Seattle's zombie problem. (Karen Joy Fowler, PEN/Faulkner Award-winning author of We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves) S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (i.e. "those idiots"), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos ®. But when Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, S.T. starts to think something's not quite right. His tried-and-true remedies -- from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis -- fail to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he suddenly discovers that the neighbors are devouring one other. Local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of Seattle's dangerous new predators. Humanity's extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a cowardly crow whose only knowledge of the world comes from TV.
