In our 15-year history as a park, the High Line's gardens are currently experiencing our driest autumn ever. Amid the second-longest rainless streak since 1869 and the city’s first drought watch in over two decades, our horticulture team’s longtime practices to conserve water and cultivate resilient gardens have taken on even greater value. Our long-standing philosophy of prioritizing resilient and locally adapted plants, water-conscious irrigation practices, and organic and chemical-free pest management are proactive measures that can support our gardens’ survival in extreme conditions and reduce our consumption of critical resources. Although we can't precisely predict every future climate event that will happen on the park, we know our horticulturists remain dedicated to weathering these changes with expertise and a steadfast commitment to serve our fellow New Yorkers and parkgoers. Read our latest blog post to learn more about how we cultivate a resilient landscape—including some tips that can be incorporated into home gardens. 🌾 : https://bit.ly/3AVs8Qg 📷 : Liz Ligon

The elderberry plant is incredibly versatile, serving as a great option for hedges, attracting wildlife, landscaping, and producing an abundance of fruit. 💜 With minimal care, it can reach heights of up to 9m in just a few years, making it a cost-effective and low-maintenance choice for a natural windbreaker. 🌬️ While this variety is self-pollinating, cross-pollination with another elderberry plant can result in even better fruit quality. The glossy dark purple to black berries, measuring 5-6 mm in diameter, appear in drooping clusters in late summer. ☀️ In addition to its aesthetic appeal and air-purifying qualities, the elderberry plant can help prevent soil erosion, provide a habitat for wildlife, and act as a natural windbreak. Easy to grow, it thrives in full sun or partial shade with a soil pH of 5.5-6.5, and can adapt to various soil types from loamy to clayey. Learn all about irrigation, fertilising, pruning, harvesting and pests of the Elderberry on our website. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dVB9nMMG #elderberry #berriesforafrica #berrycultivation #sustainability #berryplants #agriculture #berryfarmers #berrysuppliers #berries #growberries #berryproducers

Let's discuss seasonal transitions with Regenerative Agriculture & Soil Health. - This garden space had Bachelor Buttons & they reached their life cycle by dying off naturally. When that time comes, you either, 1) till your field, 2) leave it to reseed itself, 3) livestock grazing (if accessible) or 4) chop & drop with minimal soil disturbance. - The chop & drop method leaves the plant matter intact, while covering each bed with the organic matter. The organic matter protects the soil from: erosion, degradation, & leeching of nutrients. = Soil Armor. - Next, a silage trap will be utilized to promote heat to speed up the decomposition process. Soon, the soil microorganisms & decomposers will feed off the organic matter. = Soil Health. - By August, this garden space will be ready to re-amend, add irrigation, & plant seeds that will thrive. - For the Love of Soil. 🪱❤️👩🌾 Seed to Harvest. 🌱 Soil Conservation. 🛡️ #agriculture #garden #gardeninspiration #gardenlove #gardening #agriculturelife #horticulture #soil #soilhealth #soilscience #organic #organicmatter #compost #decomposition #composting #chop #drop #nofilter

Function of the Cotton Wick in Hydroponics Learn more: https://lnkd.in/grHu2cie Understand the essential function of the cotton wick in hydroponics. The cotton wick must effectively draw nutrient-rich water from the reservoir to the plant roots through capillary action. This ensures that plants receive the moisture and nutrients they need for healthy growth in systems like Wick Hydroponics. #sustainability #gardening #farming #hydroponicfarming #hydroponics #hydroponicsystem #gardeningtips #verticalfarming #aeroponics #aquaponics #agriculture #agriculturetechnology #agritechnology #garden #hydroponics #indoorfarming #sustainable #gardening101 #agritech #urbanfarming #verticalgarden #indoorgarden #sustainable #future #diy #food #healthyfood #hydroponic #hydroponicgarden #growlight

How to improve carbon sequestration in soil? 1. No till: Stop tilling or digging the soil for agriculture and gardening. 2. Mulching: Keep the soil surface always covered with dry leaves and other organic matter. 3. Cover cropping: Keep the soil surface always covered with green plants. 4. Multilayer polycropping: Create maximum plant biodiversity in agriculture or gardening. 5. Mixed animal husbandry: Create maximum animal biodiversity in agriculture. 6. No off-farm inputs: Avoid using chemicals (fertilisers, pesticides and plastics) in agriculture.
