🌟 Corporate Culture in Myanmar: A Decade of Reflections
Over the past 10 years, navigating Myanmar’s corporate world has been both enlightening and challenging. 🌏 While the workplace landscape has evolved, certain traditional practices>favoritism, nepotism, rigid hierarchies, and even discrimination>remain deeply entrenched.
What’s surprising (and concerning) is seeing multinational corporations (MNCs), once hailed as champions of global standards, gradually adopting these practices, often sidelining meritocracy in favor of outdated norms. 🤔
💡 These behaviors don’t just create barriers - they stifle innovation, devalue talent, and foster environments where connections often matter more than contributions. As a Burmese Indian, I’ve felt these dynamics firsthand, shaping not just how I navigate my career but also how I view the broader corporate landscape.
⚙️ Yet, these challenges have also been powerful teachers. They’ve taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of standing firm in values like fairness, inclusion, and integrity. They’ve shown how deeply workplace culture can influence not just individual careers but the growth or stagnation of entire industries.
📚 For young professionals entering this space: recognize the realities, but don’t lose hope. The lessons you’ll learn navigating these dynamics will shape your strength, adaptability, and perspective. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow and contribute to a corporate culture that values merit, fosters innovation, and respects diversity.
✨ Sharing these reflections as part of the journey many of us are navigating in Myanmar and beyond. What are your thoughts? Have you experienced similar challenges in your professional journey?
