Seraphim Space Index Q1 2024: Top deals 💹 🚀 The largest deal of the quarter was Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology. The business raised nearly $1bn, which will finance the initial rollout of their G60 constellation. China, looking to match or exceed space capabilities in the US, has invested heavily, publicly and privately. This quarter, we have seen a continuation of the trend of large Japanese corporations participating in space rounds. Marubeni Corporation led the D-Orbit Series C round. As is typical in the Top 10, most deals were for capitally intensive businesses. However, Q1 saw three Analyse businesses raise large rounds. This was unexpected as throughout 2023, the Analyse segment generally fell behind in investment, with some high-profile companies struggling to find product market fit. Big fan of these initiatives: NTT DOCOMO and Space Compass partners with Airbus on HAPS, committing to a USD$100 million investment in AALTO 3 June 2024 A consortium of Japanese businesses (“the Japanese Consortium”) led by NTT DOCOMO, Inc. (“NTT DOCOMO”) and Space Compass Corporation (“Space Compass”), together with Mizuho Bank Limited and the Development Bank of Japan Inc., has committed to invest USD$100min AALTO HAPS Limited (“AALTO”), which manufactures and operates the stratospheric, solar-powered Zephyr High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS). The investment will be made through the Japanese Consortium’s investment vehicle, HAPS JAPAN Corporation. This investment marks the beginning of a strategic alliance to commercialise connectivity and earth observation services using HAPS in Japan and across Asia. It will also support the industrial and commercial roadmap for AALTO’s services, targeting launch in Japan and a global entry-into-service in 2026. https://lnkd.in/ef3CUzrT
