Time saver secret! I just made a batch of granola using only three dishes. Measuring in weight using my food scale without needing extra dishes cuts time on cleanup and measuring errors. Why is this important? Eating healthy generally means to eat more whole foods and/or foods with fewer ingredients. For me, that meant learning to make my own snacks and filler foods. All the dishes it took to make and time it took to clean up was not something everyone can manage. So, finding out how to save as much time as possible and eliminate excuses has helped me with all my travel and extracurricular activities. The California School Food Safety Act is awaiting a signature or a veto from Governor Gavin Newsom, and it would prohibit school districts, county superintendents of schools or charter schools from serving children in kindergarten through 12th grade any foods or beverages containing Blue 1 and 2, Green 3, Red 40 and Yellow 5 and 6. The Act would remove from public schools such products as Hot Cheetos, Doritos, M&M’s, sports drinks, some juices and sodas, Twinkies and sugary breakfast cereals such as Froot Loops and Cap’n Crunch, according to Sacramento-based CapRadio. As expected, Big Food is fighting back. In a recent statement to CNN, John Hewitt, senior vice president, packaging and sustainability and state affairs, Consumer Brands Association, said passage of the School Food Safety Act “could cost schools and families money, limit choice and access and create consumer confusion.” Correct! ✨ This week’s spotlight shines a light on Kapish Chhabra and the recent Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue held at Vancouver City Hall. Kapish is a Columbia College, Vancouver BC. student and Community Connections practicum student with the Vancouver Food Justice Coalition (placement co-facilitated by Vancouver Food Runners). As Kapish’s placement wraps up, he reflects on what he’s learned over the last six months and shares about the primary project he was involved with: the Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue. SNEAK PEEK: ❓VFR: Kapish, what are some of your key reflections from the Dialogue? What stood out to you that day?   Kapish: One of the most striking aspects of the Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue for me was the active participation of elected City Council members. Their presence demonstrated a significant willingness to engage with community voices and collaborate on finding solutions to pressing issues within our food systems. It was encouraging to see elected officials taking the time to listen to the lived experiences and expertise shared by community members and experts during the Dialogue.   Furthermore, the willingness of diverse stakeholders to come together and engage in meaningful dialogue was inspiring. It highlighted the power of collaboration in addressing complex issues like food insecurity and building more equitable food systems.   I really liked how despite facing numerous challenges, including those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, community organizations and individuals demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability in their efforts to address food insecurity and support vulnerable populations.   Overall, the willingness of elected council members to be part of the Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue signalled a positive step towards building stronger connections between communities and government and working collaboratively to address systemic issues within our food systems.   Click the link to learn more! https://lnkd.in/gqtPPFnP
