Steve Jobs was a man obsessed with success and excellence. He worked hard —probably too much at times. He set out to change the world and in many ways he did. But it is said that some of his last words were: “At this moment, lying here in bed, sick, and remembering all of my life, I realize that all the recognition and the wealth that I have is meaningless in the face of eminent death.” I think many have interpreted this as a reason not to work hard or a reason not strive for excellence. But the truth is the Bible is clear about the importance being excellent and having a good work ethic. So then, what can we learn from this? I think the lesson is not in what we do, but in why we do it. Having a good work ethic or becoming wealthy isn’t in itself bad but for what purpose? Truth is you can accomplish little in this life and never accumulate any wealth and still waste your life. Personally I want to know that when my life is done that I’ve made an eternal difference in the lives of those I’ve been around. I need to know that I have accomplished what God destined me to do. I don’t want to just leave my kids an inheritance, —I want to leave them a legacy. I need to know people have caught a glimpse of Jesus because of my life. I don’t want to just build a career and the life of luxury. I want to know that my life made an eternal difference in the lives that crossed my path. Yes, I work hard, I set goals and I definitely have big, audacious dreams but more than all that —-I want to end my life, knowing I have accomplished everything God sent me to do.
