A warm welcome back to the BFA franchise sector survey, recently presented by Pip Wilkins QFP Wilkins (BFA) and John Spencer (NIC Group). The last survey was in 2018, and the latest report provides something for everyone, whether they are new to franchising or well-established franchisors. There were two points I was particularly curious about, first, as always, recruitment but also resales. Recruitment is usually number 1 or 2 on most franchisors' priority lists and a hugely important section of any industry survey. It was really interesting to learn that the top 3 recruiting methods were own website – word of mouth and networking – other franchise websites. Very close to the 2018 survey, which was own system website – word of mouth – and social media - with other franchise websites in 4th place. Franchise resales are becoming an important topic. As franchise networks mature it is inevitable that franchisees will want to sell up and retire. The profile of a franchisee needed to take over an established territory is often very different to the profile needed to set up a new territory. The 2024 survey indicated that 66% of franchisors expected to be involved with planning at least one resale this year, up from 51% in 2018. And there is more.
