https://lnkd.in/gDBzAr9x The Dow hit a high of 40,051, however the index turned lower to close at 39,869. A resilient economy helps corporate America to be in good shape with robust consumer spending and job gains, but slowing. Overall, those investors who waited patiently saw the reward at the end. So, maybe the discussion on “soft landing” is that we might have already landed, and might see some bumps on the road a bit later. Here's a pic I took of the TV on July 1, 2024. It was from a discussion on how to position your portfolio around the election. As you can see, the Dow was trading at 39,130. As of today the Dow is around 43,300. That's like a 10.5% return. (Not shown on the TV: The S&P 500 was up 7.9% over the same time) I'm bringing this up because the S&P 500 index is trading a 5905 as I type this and the large Wall Street firms are starting to publish their 2025 Outlooks. Goldman was the first one I read today and they are calling for S&P 500 to end next year at 6,500. Nice! But this time last year they called for the S&P 500 to end 2024 at an index level of....anyone? 4700 That was about a 5% expected return for 2024. As of today, it's up over 23% YTD. Look I love all the outlooks that get published, because the educated guesses of people smarter than me are fun to read, Seriously, I have no illusions of being smarter than ANY of these folks, in fact I revere their intellect. But the outlooks are not actionable. REMEMBER: There are no facts about the future.

In his book titled “Dow 40,000: Strategies for Profiting from the Greatest Bull Market in History”, financial advisor and author David Elias predicted in 1999 that the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index (^DJIA) would reach 40,000 by year 2016. History proved the lofty projection wrong, and Dow wasn’t even halfway through by 2016, thanks to the dot-com bubble burst and the financial crisis of 2008. Twenty-five years later, Dow is still shy of the historic 40,000 milestone by more than a percent point. How has the journey been so far? 1896: Dow Index was established with a closing value of 40 by year-end 1972: Dow reached 1000 for the first time 1995: Dow tops 5000 1999: Spectacular hype pushed Dow above 10000 2017: Dow rides the post-election rally to cross 20000 2020: Pandemic didn't stop the Dow from breaking 30000 mark 2024: Dow is flirting with the historic 40000 level What does it mean to investors like us? First: despite its popularity and historical significance, DJIA isn’t a useful Index to follow. Second: past trajectory doesn’t predict short-term future performance. Third: a well-diversified, low-cost stock portfolio is still the best bet for generating long-term wealth. We might as well just turn off the noise and keep investing regularly.
