Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting another engaging Meet & Greet session in collaboration with Edelman. With a group of senior marketing, brand, digital and PR professionals, we had a stimulating conversation centred around the findings of Edelman’s Trust Barometer, exploring the dynamic interplay between rapid innovation and societal trust issues. The session was nothing short of motivating with the discussions exploring key points such as: - Implementation is Key: Recognise that successful innovation goes beyond invention; it requires careful implementation and management to avoid backlash. - Integration of Science and Society: Scientists must effectively communicate their research, engage with the public, and leverage peer advocacy to enhance trust. - Empower Individuals: Give people control over how innovations affect them by listening to concerns, encouraging questions, and fostering open dialogue. Rounding up our series on how be a good intelligence customer, here are a few final thoughts: 1.) Accept uncertainty (sometimes). Most of the time, a good analyst will be able to give you the anticipated likelihood of an event (low, medium, high, very high) along with the methodology underpinning this. Sometimes though, there are extremely chaotic and opaque situations where it's hard to predict with precision - during a major outbreak of civil unrest or during the early stages of a coup, for example. At times like this, it's important to accept that you're dealing with a highly volatile situation and plan accordingly, rather than push your analysts into giving an inaccurate prediction. It may feel helpful at the moment, but could well come back to haunt you down the road. 2.) Share your expertise. There may well be areas where your own personal experiences can help your analysts consider angles they hadn't thought about previously - for example, Munir Hasan's knowledge of Pakistan considerably improved my analysis at Cargill. A good analyst will welcome your insights and incorporate them into his or her work. 3.) Share insights on organizational preferences and sensitivities. Each company and its executives have sensitivities about certain words or topics - maybe they prefer the term militants to terrorists, or are changing how they refer to DEI and ESG amid a polarized political environment (https://lnkd.in/gQKZrRqZ). And there are some loaded descriptors that would raise eyebrows with most corporate audiences - for example, if a report described Israel as an apartheid state. Don't muzzle your analysts (and make sure to differentiate between your personal beliefs and the organizational culture), but making sure they understand potential landmines in advance can be extremely helpful. 4.) Speak truth to power. Sometimes analysts will come to you with reporting that would force a rethink of major corporate priorities. Once you're satisfied that the identified likelihood and consequences are accurate and serious, it's important to push the report up the chain, even if this meets with resistance. This is one thing I truly appreciated about working for Eric Winter at Delta - if he was convinced something was a serious life safety risk, he would elevate it quickly and effectively. History is full of tragic instances when threat intelligence was ignored (https://lnkd.in/gFf2kSrT) - you do not want your name added to that sad legacy.
