The recent Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Four Corners episode 'The Children Refusing to Go to School' reports on many of the challenges carers face getting disengaged children to school. Education is a foundation for life, equipping children with necessary knowledge and skills for personal success, yet many children in care have poorer education outcomes compared to their peers. Issues such as Autism, ADHD, FASD and anxiety often create high levels of alienation which are challenging for carers to manage. And lack of resources and alternative school settings limit options. The episode mirrors many of the concerns raised about the challenges children in care face in mainstream school settings in the Commission for Children and Young People’s (CCYP) recent systemic report ‘Let Us Learn’.
