I get a lot of grief from a lot of people, some of it very hostile, when I point out flaws in events or experiences that have a negative impact on the #Malaysia nation #brand. Many of them take it personally, as if I have a hidden agenda. For the record, I don't. I do it for a number of reasons. Mainly because if if all you hear is good news, you start to believe that everything is fine and that nothing needs fixing. Then when you realise it isn't, it's often too late. I also do it because building a successful brand involves multiple stakeholders. Especially a #nationbrand. #Nationbranding is a bit like formula one. Hundreds of key components need to be working perfectly together for a car to win a race. If one small part isn't insync with the others, you won't even finish the race, let alone win it. Over the last week, like millions of Malaysians and many international visitors, I've flown in and out of #klia to domestic destinations. At this time of the year, KLIA is, in many ways the front line of the Malaysia nation brand building process. Porters, airline staff, baggage handlers, security, PDRM, retailers, sales staff and many others are all representatives of the Malaysia brand. It's important for Malaysians to see that these critical actors in the nation branding process are doing their part in delivering on the promises made by the government with #Malaysiamadani. So anyway, back to my reflections on the holiday season experience. Over the years, the experience has been underwhelming, with longer than necessary queues at checkin counters and not enough lanes at the security area tucked away in the corner. This year, the whole process was about as smooth and efficient as it could be. Airlines had more checkin staff manning the counters. The security process, while still a national embarrassment due to the cheap equipment (think trays that are too small and rollers that don't roll) was manned by personnel who were doing their best to safeguard national security while ensuring a stress free experience. They've also added extra lanes to reduce the bottleneck. For me it was a stress free 'balik kampung'. The first in a long time.... So a big thank you to all those who worked at KLIA during the holidays, especially those who sacrificed time during their most important holiday of the year to make sure the rest of us could travel.
