Get to know Envira Amazonia, a forestry project currently in our Climate Impact Portfolio. This project supports the conservation of 39,300 hectares of the Amazon Rainforest that were in danger of being cut down to make way for cattle grazing areas. Learn more about how this project fights climate change and improves Brazillian livelihoods at https://lnkd.in/dFtbknN5 ?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social&utm_content=climate-impact-portfolio You can help remove carbon from the atmosphere by supporting the Envira Amazonia project. 🌲 Protected and properly managed forests are a key to climate change mitigation. However, even the areas that look just fine on a map, may be producing carbon emissions rather than capturing them. 🔎 In this cross-border investigation https://lnkd.in/eHv4sxJK Rita Cruz Louisa Bouri-Saouter and Kai Rüsberg explored the three biggest forest regions that stand out as carbon emitters in Europe. They analysed how the detrimental forestry practices – monocultures, hybridisations or clear-cutting – imposed by forestry lobbies, as well as systemic governmental failures to counter those practices, effectively have transformed Les Landes in France, the big forest in the center of Portugal, and the Harz in Germany into greenhouse gas emitters. 👀 Read more on Público: https://lnkd.in/etBNKJZS Three more episodes on Portugal will come in July&August.

Grateful for the opportunity to present about climate change for the Healthy Forest Workshop for private landowners and participate in the Goddard Forum: Visioning Climate-Smart Forestry in the Mid-Atlantic Region earlier this month. Climate-smart forestry is essential for addressing the dual challenges of climate change and forest conservation. By integrating sustainable practices that enhance forest resilience, improve carbon sequestration, and support biodiversity, climate-smart forestry not only helps mitigate greenhouse gas emissions but also ensures that forest ecosystems can adapt to changing conditions. This approach fosters the sustainable management of forest resources, benefiting local communities, economies, and the environment. Ultimately, it plays a critical role in building a more sustainable future for both people and the planet. #climatechange #climatesmartforests #mitigation #adaptation #biodiversity #pennstate #goddardforum

The Paris Agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) cements the crucial role that forests play in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Countries are increasingly recognizing this role, including the Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector as part of their mitigation efforts in their new or updated NDCs. Ahead of the general election on 4 July, we published a #CalltoAction document, Trees for People, Place and Nature: Growing Trees for Tomorrow's needs, setting out four key areas for government to recognise and act on. We are calling for the next government to commit to working with the forestry profession to unlock the potential of our trees, woods and forests, in support of delivering against the timber, biodiversity, and climate crises.
