It’s important for our communities to recognize and celebrate the diverse histories and cultures that have contributed to our nation. And one day of profound historical significance and celebration is Juneteenth. In this article, we’ll explore the history of Juneteenth, why it’s important and why we celebrate it:

**GIA READER** Since 2020, Grantmakers in the Arts (GIA) has been monitoring how our members are adapting grantmaking practices in response to the pandemic and the push for racial justice. Our 2023 survey shows a mixed picture: while there's a slowdown in the increase of support for arts and culture, many funders are maintaining their levels of support. General operating support and flexibility in fund use have decreased, but there's good news with increased multi-year support and continued strong backing for BIPOC artists and organizations. GIA stresses the need to keep these progressive changes alive, advocating for sustained commitment to marginalized communities, including artists with disabilities and Trans artists. GIA highlights the importance of shared experiences and mutual support among its members to continue fostering equity and resilience in the arts sector. In her research, Dr Giulia Torino, Lecturer in Urban Geography, examines how pride about multiculturalism in Latin American cities prevents racism in urban planning from being addressed. In the corridors of history, power has often been viewed as the domain of governments and monarchies. But what if we told you that power is being redefined right before our eyes? The @lantic Xplorers, an innovative youth collective, is challenging our perceptions of influence and change. They believe that true power lies not in traditional authority, but in collaborative action and impactful voices. 💡 Key Insights: 1. Power is having a voice and using it to make a change. 2. Impactful voices can create ripples of transformation in society. 3. While traditional power structures exist, collaborative action can be equally influential. In a world facing complex challenges, empowering young voices is not just beneficial – it's essential. Inspired by the Black Atlantic exhibition at @The Fitzwilliam Museum, these young people contemplated the personal meaning of 'People, Power, and Resistance' and their significance for individuals and communities through a zine-making project. This inspiring project, part of the FUTURE/POWER partnership between The Fitzwilliam Museum, Museum X, and @Soham Village College, empowers the @tlantic Xplorers to engage in interdisciplinary co-research spaces, shaping the discourse on resistance and positive change. I think about how this video also applies to those who think of becoming faculty and working in education in general. The article/podcast/report by Howe and Thompson in nature (found here: https://lnkd.in/ePBcsB6N. ) shows that we do not get faculty from most institutions from many institutions from which they could originate. I, myself, did not graduate from any of the institutions that commonly produce faculty, but if we do not bring in faculty from other institutions and places, what does that do to the voices lost and the experiences not present in academia? Just a thought as I listened to this piece.
