In a system where impermanence and instability prevail, many people affected by foster care lack a solid support system. Children, young adults, and parents often feel totally alone. Mentorship provides a caring, supportive relationship so these vulnerable groups can share their burdens. First City Church in Florida is making waves with their mentorship program and parenting class--so much that the state began seeking their advice. We spoke with Rick, Erica, and Jesse of First City Church who stepped in to mentor parents and prove just how much mentorship matters. To read their story, visit our blog. https://lnkd.in/eh3hVu45

1 TO 10 CHILDREN IN THE WORLD NEED YOU AND ARE WAITING FOR YOU More than 700,000 children in WORLD are permanently and legally separated from their biological parents and seeking a new family to call their own. Adoption is a social, emotional, and legal process through which children become full and permanent members of another family, giving the new parent(s) the same rights and obligations as biological parents. Adoption is also multifaceted, occurring in different ways to meet the specific needs of children. For example, kinship adoption by blood relatives or fictive kin who have an emotional connection with the child is one way for Virginia’s children to stay connected to their family, culture and traditions. Foster parents in Virginia also often become forever families to children and have adopted over 60% of our youth in foster care. In Chance Orphanage , we prioritize reunifying children with their families whenever possible, and finding kinship caregivers or new, loving families for children when reunification is not possible. Again,We ask that you consider getting curious – about everything you know or think you know about adopting a child (or children!). Consider opening your heart and home to a child. Consider adoption.

🖇STRATEGIC SATURDAYS🖇 This month I was honored to support the team of Royal Family Kids Anchorage by speaking at their annual fundraising and informational event, Night to Remember. This ministry serves children in foster care with some of the deepest trauma by providing a week in the outdoors surrounded by vetted, highly trained adults to help them have a normal childhood experience. We discussed 20 ways to support the foster care community (and only one of them involved being a foster parent). Why is this being posted under this “Strategic Saturday” series? Because caring shouldn’t be something we do “strategically”. Caring is a lifestyle. Caring is who we strive to be. Caring cannot be falsified (although some will try and some organizations do a good attempt at it). You know what caring looks like deep down. My encouragement today is to always advocate for the care of the least of these in strategic means. Use your abilities to advance those who have no voice. It’s the most fulfilling thing you’ll ever do. Keep Leading Forward, D. #fostercare #leadership #childwelfare #childadvocacy

✨ In our trainings, we often prepare volunteers for the journey of building trust with their foster youth, acknowledging that it can take time. Here's a heartwarming example of a CASA and youth who hit it off from the start: “Often you hear about it taking a long time for a foster child to open up to their CASA but for some reason we hit it off right away. My most-fulfilling moment was when my CASA child told me about a conversation she had with her biological mother. She was sharing with her mother that she was going through a particularly hard time and her mother asked her who she turns to for advice and support in those situations. She told me that right away she said, ‘My CASA.’ It doesn’t get more fulfilling than that.” 🌟 In challenging times, we all need someone to turn to, usually found in our parents. However, in the dependency system, it’s not always straightforward. Even our most remarkable foster parents juggle large case loads and may not always address deeper issues. At CASA, we embrace the reality that sometimes it takes a collaborative effort to guide a deserving child through their toughest times. 💪 CASAs play a frontline role on that team — spotting red flags before they escalate, providing companionship and guidance, and fostering trust through unique one-on-one relationships. We extend our gratitude to all individuals supporting children in foster care through the dependency system, and we cherish every moment a name comes off our waiting list for a CASA volunteer. After all, we understand the profound impact it will have on that child's life. 🙏 #CASA #FosterCare #Support #Impact #ChildAdvocacy #MakingADifference #EmotionalSupport

Stability is something so many of us long for. In our relationships. Our careers. Our health. For foster kids, stability is difficult to find. On average, they move homes every nine months. A new family, new room, new neighborhood – over, and over, and over again. Thankfully, the Family Urgent Response System (FURS) is helping to bring foster kids stability. As a helpline that provides trained, in-person support whenever foster kids call, FURS brings solutions to conflict. Since FURS was created just 3 years ago, foster home changes in CA have decreased by 16%. The amount of kids who’ve been in foster care for a year and moved 3 or more times is also at an all-time low, down 20% since FURS was first implemented. FURS works. It provides stability. Help us make sure that stability isn’t stripped away from California’s most vulnerable kids. If your organization or group would like to join over 590 others and fight to keep this essential program for foster youth, sign our Children's Movement campaign. It takes less than 30 seconds.
