Each year, approximately 305 million pounds of food are discarded during this holiday, tripling the daily average of residential food waste. Organisations like FareShare UK and us here at Waste To Plate play a crucial role in reducing waste further down the supply chain. FareShare UK, the country’s largest food redistribution charity, partners with manufacturers, supermarkets, and suppliers to redirect surplus food to frontline charities, providing meals for vulnerable communities. Similarly, Waste to Plate collaborates with FareShare, local supermarkets, and businesses to rescue surplus food and redistribute it to those in need, providing free, nutritious meals, reducing carbon emissions, and decreasing the amount of food waste sent to landfills. It’s encouraging to see the progress made in reducing food waste, especially with leading companies and dedicated charities stepping up to address this challenge. However, there’s still a considerable journey ahead. Coop: our SmartHappy of the week is italian and deeply committed At a time when reducing food waste is becoming a mantra in Italian households faced with the cost of living, Coop once again confirms its commitment in sustainability. Coop has thus built a dedicated website regarding the fight against food waste : CoopNoSpreco. This platform is a pillar of knowledge, good practices and initiatives to empower the players of the food chain to act. 👉 One of their famous initiatives, famously known in Italy as it’s active nationwide since 2003 is the “Buon Fine” project. This one is committed to recovering food that would otherwise go to waste and donating it to people in need, and has resulted in the donation of 4,480 tonnes of food in 2023. 👉 At the same time, for many years, Coop has been proposing Mangiami Subito, their first measure in the fight against food waste, which consists in extending the products close to their expiration date. 👉 Its determination to educate consumers is exemplary as Coop promotes programs to support school education, through the Sapere Coop project, which has been active for over 40 years. 👉 There’s no little action to fight food waste. On their website “CoopNoSpreco”, they also provide recipes based on food leftovers. A last proof of their amazing commitment in this fight? Coop has published a white paper on the subject.
