#Pakistanis go to the polls on Thursday. Here's one bright spot in the data: armed attacks on politicians are down to a quarter of the level they were a decade ago. Yet, the political outlook includes a combustible mix of economic turmoil, border tensions, and rising militancy. That's before we get to concerns about security at the voting stations, low turnout and risks of military intervention in a country where no prime minister has ever completed their elected term in office. As part of Bashar al-Assad’s efforts to re-engineer power centers within the #Ba'ath Party, the elections held during the General Conference in May 2024 increased the number of Central Committee members to 125, with Assad appointing 45 of them. Military members, those affiliated with militias, security and #military networks, or those under sanctions, constitute 63.2% of the total. The elections highlight the significant presence of the Alawite faction in power centers, making up 32% of the committee. Data analysis indicates that Bashar al-Assad has formed a solid bloc within the party, allowing him to transform the Ba'ath Party from a nominal political vessel focused solely on mobilization and state control into a political force that enhances his authority and ensures his continuity, regardless of the future political landscape.
