As an app made for finding meaningful, long-term relationships - building a strong community is of ultimate importance to us. Now that we have around 800K+ registered users, we felt that it was the right time to invest in another channel of communication to get closer to our audience through curated offline experiences. And what better day to celebrate meaningful connections if not on Friendship Day? In collaboration with The Serra Cafe we organised a fun-filled evening last Sunday, dedicated to the spirit of friendship. The event featured performances by stand-up comedians, followed by a musician. Mr. Kalyan Mukhopadhyay, ex-IGP of Kolkata Police, also addressed the topic of women’s safety in this increasingly digital world. An eventful evening packed with a full house allowed us to really have a chance to connect with a section of youngsters in the city. 🥊 I’m taking a shot at dating apps… by launching IRL dating and matchmaking events for the South Asian and Muslim community! It all started when a friend of mine invited me to come along as a plus one for a dating event. I’m Muslim and Pakistani, and those factors are important to me when meeting people! I ended up declining. But it got me thinking… Outside of apps, there weren’t any places for young people like me to intentionally meet other South Asian and Muslim singles, despite the rise of in-person dating events. There’s a couple of insights I picked up on my first launch which I’d love to share! 🥱 Wanting something different: many second gen South Asians and Muslims want more autonomy in the process of finding a life partner, but dating app fatigue is prevalent. Their criteria for a partner is way different from what their parents would care about. And they are also more open to intercultural (and sometimes interreligious) marriages- all factors for our events! 🙅 Calling it dating: many South Asians and Muslims (especially parents) don’t like the term “dating”. When many families view courtship as a family affair, and since it’s often done with the intention of marriage, “dating” can seem like a modern term. That’s why I pivoted to “matchmaking” for marketing instead. 💸 Big $$$ and community: If you’ve seen Indian Matchmaking, you know what I’m talking about- this industry is old and big, with matchmakers (called “rishta aunties”) who can charge anything from thousands of dollars to personally connect you to other single people, to more tech savvy entrepreneurs who operate exclusive Whatsapp/ FB groups, and of course dating apps like Muzz and Salams. Although there’s a lot of competition, this also means we have a lot of channels to hack and market through! I’m betting that if we can provide a fun and comfortable space for young South Asian/ Muslims to meet other singles who share their values, we might just replace rishta aunties! RAKSHABANDHAN? Rakshabandhan, a festival symbolizing the sacred bond between brothers and sisters, is a day of celebration across India. Traditionally, sisters tie a rakhi around their brothers' wrists, symbolizing love, protection, and commitment. Over time, this bond has extended beyond siblings, with friends and even acquaintances tying rakhis to signify their mutual respect and care. Yet, as we celebrate this beautiful festival, we cannot ignore the stark contrast between these values and the harsh reality of the society we live in. Today, we find ourselves in a country that, on one hand, rejoices in festivals like Rakshabandhan, Durga Puja, and Navratri, celebrating the divine feminine and familial bonds. On the other hand, this same country witnesses unimaginable horrors—rapes of young girls, brutal attacks on women, and heinous crimes that defy humanity. Just recently, we marked Independence Day, a day meant to celebrate our freedom and progress. But what kind of independence do we truly have in a land where safety is a luxury, and justice often feels out of reach? We live in a society where a pregnant elephant is mercilessly killed, where women and girls face violence daily, and where even doctors, who are supposed to be revered, become victims of heinous crimes. In such a world, what is the significance of celebrating Rakshabandhan? Did those who commit such crimes not have sisters? Did they never experience the love and protection that this festival embodies? These festivals, meant to bring us together and remind us of our values, seem hollow when we consider the atrocities happening around us. Why do we continue to celebrate independence, Rakshabandhan, and other festivals when the very principles they stand for are violated daily? It's time to reflect on the true meaning of these celebrations and question the society we have become. Can we really celebrate when so many are denied the very rights and protections that these festivals symbolize? #LinkedIn #JUSTICE
