Everywhere in Marin you’re surrounded by natural beauty. About one-third of the county, or 118,000 acres, is forested woodland. The county is dominated by Mount Tamalpais with streams and valleys falling through verdant and protected forests of Redwood and Madrone trees. Marin is surrounded on three sides by water: the Pacific Ocean, San Pablo Bay, and San Francisco Bay, with dramatic coastlines and vistas. Hiking is a very popular pastime. Marin has 13 small towns and 14 villages. The towns, which average 16,000 people, are mostly arrayed across the hills and valleys on the east side of Mount Tamalpais, facing the bay. The villages of West Marin are adjacent to parks and farmland and along the Pacific coast. Marin is in one of five areas of the world (about 3%) that have a Mediterranean climate, with mild wet winters and warm, dry summers. From May through October, average daytime temperatures are in the 70’s with little or no precipitation. From November through April, daytime temperatures average about 60 degrees during the day with occasional rain. Nighttime temperatures average from the mid 30’s to the mid 50’s year-round, infrequently freezing, with no more than frost on roofs. Learn more at www.livinginmarin.com 💻 Have questions! 🔥 Happy Bonfire Night! 🔥 As you gather around the fire to celebrate, here are some essential tips to help keep your garden, wildlife, and loved ones safe. Remember, a little extra care can make a big difference! 1️⃣ Choose Your Spot Carefully 🌿 Keep the bonfire well away from sheds, fences, and overhanging trees. 2️⃣ Check for Wildlife 🦔 Hedgehogs and other small creatures often take shelter in wood piles. Always check before lighting. 3️⃣ Dispose of Garden Debris Safely 🍂 Only burn dry, untreated wood and plant material that isn’t suitable for composting. 4️⃣ Keep Water Handy 💧 Always have a bucket of water or hose nearby, just in case. 5️⃣ Stay Safe with Sparklers 🎇 Hold sparklers at arm’s length, and dispose of them in a bucket of cold water after use. You can even use Carrots from your fridge or Play-Doh to create additional distance between the sparkler and your child's hand. 6️⃣ Mind Your Pets 🐾 Keep pets inside and calm, as fireworks and bonfires can be stressful for them. Enjoy the warmth of your bonfire while keeping your garden and wildlife safe! 🌟

Looking to add a unique and adorable companion to your life? Desert tortoises make fantastic pets, but they require special care, especially when it comes to their diet. They thrive on native plants like grasses, wildflowers, and leafy greens—great options you can even grow in their enclosure! Caring for a desert tortoise goes beyond diet. With cooler weather on the way, desert tortoises start preparing for brumation (a form of hibernation). During this time, they'll slow down and sleep for a few months, so it’s important to create a safe space for them to burrow and rest. Keeping their environment just right will help them stay healthy through this natural process. Ready to adopt one of these incredible creatures? Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3oslhr4

I enjoyed some camping in CO's San Isabel Natl Forest yesterday, where prescribed burns will soon start. Why do we set the woods on fire, anyways? BENEFITS OF PRESCRIBED BURNS Watershed Management - burning away overgrown shrubbery allows more water to accumulate in a forest's natural watershed. This means impurities are diluted, to the benefit of the natural vegetation, wildlife, and human populations who get more water; and cleaner water, too. Hazardous Fuels Reduction - areas to be burned are overgrown. This means, if fire starts, it will burn hotter, spread wider, and last longer. Prescribed burns safely remove dangerous overgrowth. People live in the path of these potential wildfires, so prescribed burns make those people much safer. Soil Quality - Prescribed burns reintroduce vital nutrients into the soil which overgrowth has sucked away. This process revitalizes vegetation and the grazers who feed upon it as well. Habitat Diversification - As these wild forest habitats return closer to their natural state through prescribed burns, a greater variety of plant and animal life will return as well, resulting in more vibrant flowering in Spring, greener Summers, prettier Autumn changes, and more wonderful wildlife to complement it all. Take a moment to think about the hardworking wildland firefighters and others who work every day to get us closer to a safer and more beautiful country. Happy Sunday!

Wild Ingleborough: why we’re protecting, restoring and reviving Yorkshire’s rarest upland landscape. Ingleborough is home to species found nowhere else in the world, and where many others could make a come-back. If you stood here over a thousand years ago, you would have seen a wild abundance of plants and animals. The limestone pavements would be barely recognisable from today’s bare and moon-like appearance — swathed in mosses, ferns and shrubs and the the grasses and flowers would be brimming with butterflies and bees. Today, remnants of this rich and wild Yorkshire survive in unconnected fragments. But Ingleborough has the potential to be one of the most important limestone landscapes in the world! We are working with partners to make Ingleborough the beacon for nature’s recovery in the Yorkshire Dales. Discover more - https://lnkd.in/e4XK2j7j

The Arboricultural Association have the answers: https://lnkd.in/eucpb7TA ☀️ Trees get hot in this weather too. They may need more than a watering can, but every little helps! www.trees.org.uk/watering Also inspiration from Dougal Driver on the topic of tree care, not just tree planting. #wateryourtrees #treeplanting
