Our view of the Defence Industry Development Strategy is to focus on the importance of understanding the resilience that can be provided by an AIC Supply Chain. The DSR was clear on the environment we could find ourselves operating in. Therefore, Goal has continually been recommending that any acquisition decisions consider the resilience of the ‘global’ supply chain through the entire lifecycle. We would recommend that supply chain preparedness be considered at the acquisition phase to mitigate risk. How would a Global Supply Chain work in a contested environment? Supply Chain Preparedness: Defence Preparedness is the 'sustainable capacity to apply capabilities to accomplish government-directed tasks,’ a primary functional output of defence governance. It derives demand signals from strategic guidance and rationalises these against resource constraints, thereby setting actionable targets for force generation that are linked to strategy. The ability to generate a force is also dependent on the DSR-quoted National Defence Initiative. How often do we truly exercise defence industry and the whole of government on major exercises? ‘Desktop’ scenario-based exercises could be conducted to determine warfighting capability and how resilient the supply chain is within given scenarios. Supply Chain Interdiction: By determining supply chain resilience, we would also determine how susceptible our supply chains are to interdiction. What if a country could erode combat effectiveness simply by buying the entire supply of a critical component on the open market? Disabling an entire platform without firing a shot. This is why the determination of supply chain resilience and the ability of AIC to provide that resilience, are important considerations from the outset.

Seeing a live attack play out, with the defending team tracking and responding was fascinating.
