Today, the rarest day of the year (29th Feb), is for raising awareness of #RareDiseases, which I'm passionate about having carried out lab research on a rare disease and then working directly with people and families affected by them. What struck me from this CIRS workshop was the need to think more innovatively about how to incentivise R&D for rare disease treatments, particularly for ultra-rare diseases. While regulatory incentives have enabled the development of many treatments, there are still so many diseases that are under studied and neglected. Let's hope drug development stakeholders can come together to tackle this in future!

Sanofi's recent decision to revise its 340B discount program highlights a critical balance between phama profitability and public health. Pharma companies Eli Lilly and Johnson & Johnson have been making news lately because of plans -- and lawsuits -- to change how they give federally-mandated discounts to certain hospitals, known as the 340B program. Sanofi will now require hospitals to submit claims data to verify eligibility before granting credits, aiming to address program inefficiencies and potential misuse. This policy impacts over 20 medications, including Dupixent and Kevzara. While Sanofi frames this as ensuring fair pricing, hospitals worry it could hinder their ability to support low-income patients. The move underscores the ongoing challenge of delivering affordable healthcare while sustaining innovation and revenue in the pharmaceutical industry.
