Figure’s Post

In presentations I give on generative AI, I often show the Figure 1 demo where it integrates an OpenAI model so you can get the robot to do things via natural language. The interaction is great, but the robot itself looks clunkier than something like Tesla's Optimus. Well, looks like that's changing now. Figure has previewed Figure 2, which they say is coming next week. I'm very excited to see what they unveil, and particularly to see how it incorporates updated models like GPT-4o (or, possibly, since OpenAI is a collaborator, a newer model we haven't seen yet).

Wayfair is laying off 1,650 employees, weeks after CEO urged staff to work harder - MarketWatch This headline came out this morning. I wonder how that will help the company grow revenue? Sure it's the typical hack to reduce expenses. The other side of profitability is to increase revenue. How is that going to work with demoralized workers? Did they go overboard with hiring during the pandemic? Who made that decision? How did it take so long to figure that out? Now they are going to "right size" including laying off engineers and management. It sure sounds like someone was not watching their metrics close enough. Isn't this a leadership issue? I suppose that the people who remain could be happy that the dead weight is gone if, in fact, they had a bunch of dead weight. Isn't that a leadership issue too? 99% doesn't know that you can switch numbers in percentage (%) calculations: 8% of 25 is the same as 25% of 8. 28% of 50 is the same 50% of 28...and so forth. Sometimes making it easier to calculate/estimate. Numbers have layers and many build-in wonders.

I think of metrics in terms of time. Whether they reflect what has happened in the past; what is happening now and what we're doing to affect future performance. But it can lead to a blizzard of numbers. So I'm showing them in terms of traffic lights (Although the numbers will be available. Obviously) Each timeframe will have it's set of metrics and for the past I've chosen; i) Cash - the ultimate leading indicator. ii) Working Capital - often overlooked but the true indicator of Balance sheet strength iii) Trailing Twelve Month revenue growth - the best revenue trend metric (comparing revenue for the last 12 months to the revenue for the 12 months prior to that) iv) Trailing Twelve Month Margin - everything is going to end up affecting profit so we need a comprehensive measure for profit.
