If you are on any professional women’s group, chances are you have seen this poster of an event for all the wrong reasons-
🤦🏻♀️Upon further enquiry, it turned out that the organisers had four women speakers, who dropped out closer to the event…too bad! I am sure next time, they will try harder and best of luck to them.
#manels have been a topic of discussion for years now. I personally know women who have taken this up with zeal; not just calling them out, but actually solving for this by making visible more profiles of women at different levels.
If Manels disturb you, here’s what you can do…
1. Question your idea of ‘merit’ and ‘deserved’. Understand that most people occupying positions of so called ‘merit’ are primarily there because they had greater access, being from a certain economic class, being from a certain geography…or combination thereof. This is not to take away from their hard work and contribution, but just factoring in humility, which is the first step to look beyond your privilege. Unless we are talking athletics or arts or discovery of scientific principles, let’s understand that getting the seat creates the merit, rather than the other way around.
2. Get over heirarchy and positions. In arts, sports or creativity (including technology), you will find people in their twenties challenging conventional and established leaders and that is par for course! In corporate world, however, success comes from the right to have your opinion counted, which in turn is a function of the seat…and so on…So, if you really want to find a female, look below your eye level, coz your eye level is crowded by powerful men and few women!
3. Invisibility of women is real. The fact that few women get seen and heard again and again further execerbates this perception of there being few exceptions to the rule of paucity of women. So, if you get the stage, be you man or woman, pull up a few new ones and make them visible.
4. Dont be defensive if you are a woman and get invited because you are a woman. Remember most men are there precisely because they are…men!
5. Building truly diverse dialogues require representation as the first requirement. Why waste money to organise events to eat the same food, go to the same places and hear the same people??? Events are not sustainable and you are just enriching bottomlines of event companies🤦🏻♀️ Might as well do something that counts😄
Happy un’manel’ing everyone…
If you don't know Happily you don't know what you are missing. I highly recommend them - they are FIERCE, effective and make every event meaningful!
