New York City is on the verge of a pivotal environmental initiative with the introduction of a new bill mandating the retrofitting of buildings with bird-friendly windows by 2030. Spearheaded by Council Members Tiffany Cabán and Shaun Abreu, the goal is to reduce the staggering 250,000 bird deaths caused by collisions with glass windows each year. While the legislation aims to protect migratory birds and aligns with previous laws, it’s sparking fierce debate. The Real Estate Board of New York warns of significant financial burdens for property owners, citing costs that could increase by up to 50%. Yet, environmental advocates like NYC Audubon see it as an essential step toward urban wildlife conservation. This conflict underscores a crucial question: can we harmonize urban development with environmental responsibility? As this legislation progresses, it will be fascinating to witness how New York balances the urgency of wildlife protection against the economic implications for property owners.

There is vibrant green thread running through the Labour movement's history. In 1949, Attlee's Labour Government first established National Parks in the UK - and were envisioned as a “people’s charter for the open air." Many credit the working people's trespass in Kinder Scout in 1932 as an important paving stone for this. 75 years on, and it's fantastic to see Labour showing leadership once again in this space. Today's announcement is genuinely good news - our National Parks are not in a good way. Announcement includes: 🌳A commitment to "strengthening Protected Landscape’s mandate to recover nature". 🌳"Revamping governance" of national parks and national landscapes. 🌳"Providing National Park Authorities with a general power of competence" to clarify their legal framework and remove barriers to integrated delivery. 🌳 Ensuring public bodies that own land (and water companies!) have a duty to deliver better environmental outcomes https://lnkd.in/epRD7D9S
