As educational attainment rises and professional opportunities expand across Southeast Asia, more couples are making the decision to delay starting families or to have fewer children. This shift reflects a significant cultural transformation, leading to declining birth and fertility rates throughout the region.
In Malaysia, the evidence of change over the past fifty years is profound. The fertility rate has plummeted from an average of 4.9 children per woman in 1970 to just 1.6 in 2023. Similarly, in Vietnam, the birth rate has declined to 15.141 births per 1,000 people in 2023, marking a 2.33% decrease from the previous year.
Singapore's scenario also highlights this regional trend. Despite government incentives aimed at boosting fertility, the fertility rate in this highly educated city-state remains stubbornly low, around 1.1 in recent years, well below the replacement level of 2.1 that is needed to sustain the population.
This evolving dynamic speaks to a broader narrative of choice and planning, reflecting how couples are reshaping their futures and family structures in today’s changing world.
