IN GOD WE TRUST, ALL OTHERS MUST BRING DATA (INCLUDING YOU!) Its no new news that the entertainment industry is going through a massive pivot. The value chain is going from producer centric to creator/audience centric (kudos Doug Shapiro for outlining it very clearly). Streaming landscape is ultra competitive (as Evan Shapīro has pointed out in his recent excellent writings). Add European elections, economic pressures, conflicts and reverberations of COVID and SAG strikes. In this enviroment executives, ecosystem leaders, and policymakers (either straight in governments, film and media orgs or elswhere) have to make some tough decisions. And gut feeling does not help (always). Our colleagues Jakob Isak Nielsen, @Cathrin Bengesser, @Ivana Kostovska, Marius Øfsti & et al at CresCine have put together a remarkable dossier on the State of small European (film) markets. Its comprehensive, solid, interactive and easy to explore - a total must read for anyone in this business. Dive in, it will help you to make better decisions and bring you the data-> AC Coppens Manu Guddait, Tine Fischer, Edith Sepp, Rolandas Kvietkauskas Laimonas Ubavičius, Dita Rietuma, Ene Katrine Rasmussen, Roosa Toivonen, Ross Keane, Luís Chaby Vaz, Virginie Nouvelle Heidy Purga Karlo Funk Sarah Geeroms Ezra Eeman Sofie Hvitved Loïc De Visscher Anssi Komulainen Eleni Sharp, Rafaël Huybrechts, Ricardo Tomé, Wouter Quartier, Matthijs Wouter Knol.
Curious about the current state of the European film industry? 🌍🎬🤔 Ivana Kostovska (Film & TV Economics Researcher, IMEC-SMIT-VUB) and Jakob Isak Nielsen (Associate Professor, Aarhus Universitet) delve into the key insights from CresCine’s dynamic panel at Cannes! CresCine, a Horizon Europe-backed project aimed at boosting the competitiveness of European small markets, was proud to present its first-ever interactive “Small European Film Markets: Portraits and Comparisons” report at this year’s #MDF24 edition. The report meticulously researched and compiled by Jakob Isak Nielsen, Ivana Kostovska, Marius Øfsti and Cathrin Bengesser focuses on the characteristics of the seven European film ecosystems and the development of their industries, production capacity, approaches to public creative industries policy, as well as the key challenges facing each one, as well as the comparison of the ecosystems’ levels of domestic audiences, theatrical exports, average budgets, production volumes, and festival recognition from 2014 to 2022. A special thank you to our other guest speakers who joined us on stage: Fatih Abay, Manuel Damasio, Rūta K. and Ulrike Rohn, as well as our moderator and Head of #CannesNext, Sten Saluveer. Shields filmmakers’ call action on new studio plan “There is so much going on in the region at the moment, with Crown Works Studios progressing in Sunderland and The Northern Studios in Hartlepool, it feels like a really exciting time to be a filmmaker in the North East and it’s about time too.” Award-winning Red Stamp Productions, based in South Shields, have secured £30,000 from Innovate UK to develop a state-of-the-art post-production facility and help take its Beach Road base “to the next level”, with work set to begin in the coming weeks. The initiative has been supported by South Tyneside Council as part of its drive to attract more creative industry jobs to the area. A few weeks late, but still great news: CresCine consortium has produced a great initial study on what characterises the small European film markets and affects their competitiveness (focusing on and comparing 7 case countries). We compared how the structures of domestic markets are affecting the small film industries and what tend to be alternative approaches to exporting strategies. Of course, also analysing how the domestic policies and circumstances are affecting the exports and vice versa. At least here in Estonia it is already read with great interest. So, here it is, enjoy: https://lnkd.in/dnZtcF28

To turn the tides and avoid the collapsing of ecological, economical and political systems, we need to create alternative visions. Visions of a better working planet. Most media that deal with our future are dystopic. 😵 From a neurogical and psychological perspective this is the worst that we can do: Create tons of vivid imaginary how the world is going down. Because, as neuroscitists today agree, life brings about what we think about. This is why it is so crucial to create best case scenarios with solid ideas how wo can manage the upcoming challenges. 💫 Therefore I celebrate movies like this one. Jan Baumann creates a beautifull outlook for a better tomorrow in a fantasy documentary playing in a future setting in 2053. How did we face the multitude of obstacles and threats in an everchanging and grossly endangered society? Lets create more utopias and positive images with precise ideas how to make these happen. It will be the first step to bring about real change 💪
My film is ready for the Premiere. ❤️ Join us on May 26th in Dresden and see how a peaceful, sustainable and fair future could look like.

The European Film Market (EFM) will once again and under the new direction of Tanja Meissner welcome international industry representatives to Berlin from February 13 to 19, 2025. The market will bring together international film industry representatives, including producers, global sales agents, and distributors, as well as cinema operators, high-tech companies, and investors from all over the world. This year, Spain and its vibrant film industry will be in the spotlight of the EFM as its ’Country in Focus’. Spain’s rich diversity of filming locations, creative excellence, and forward-thinking technological advancements make it a perfect match for the EFM’s emphasis on innovation and emerging industry trends. A new highlight of the upcoming EFM is the newly established Innovation Hub, set within the iconic Gropius Bau. For the first time, an entire floor will be dedicated to showcasing creativity and pioneering developments in the international production sector. Cutting-edge technologies and AI-based solutions – from script development to distribution – will take centre stage, offering a glimpse into tools that are transforming the industry. The Berlinale Series Market, the EFM-platform for series formats, will again be celebrating the international diversity and creativity of series production. Around 15 carefully selected series with high market potential will be presented, providing a unique arena for networking and business opportunities. In May of this year, Berlinale Director Tricia Tuttle brought four Berlinale institutions together to form a new consortium: Berlinale Pro* unites the European Film Market, Berlinale Talents, the Berlinale Co-Production Market, and the World Cinema Fund.
