Today our wonderful Health and Wellbeing team hosted a networking event at our Kilmarock office to support their participants. The event gave them the opportunity to engage with their local health providers and form a health management pathway beyond their Fedcap journey. We had a great turn out, with 𝟭𝟬𝟬% of participants who completed a feedback form saying they would recommend this event to a friend, one participant said "I was looking forward to this event for ages. Made me feel very welcome" A massive thank you to Morag for arranging the event, and we would also like to thank everyone who attended today, including: Andy's Man Club, Community Health Activity Team (CHAT), EA Essential Skills, Dietetics and Health Promotion (NHS), Social Security Scotland, Dean Castle Park Run and PoweinPilates. #FedcapHealthandWellbeing

Public health is such a fascinating area of health. It's all about supporting people and communities at the individual and macro level to improve their health and quality of life. Although many doctors and other healthcare professionals specialise in public health in clinical and non-clinical roles, did you know that you don't need to have a degree in medicine or nursing or any professional qualification in order to work in public health? Public health is a fantastic career direction for arts, humanities and social sciences graduates too. As someone who has worked in frontline care with two arts degrees, I could see that I brought to my work specific kinds of empathy, creativity and innovation which helped foster inclusion and build rapport with marginalised people...which helped improve their health. Because of my foundation in the arts. The way you learn to think about people and society via studying arts and social sciences. Here at the Faculty of Health, at the The University of Sheffield we strongly encourage current students and graduates in the arts and social sciences, to consider moving into healthcare - be it studying a clinical degree such a nursing or speech and language therapy, or studying a masters in public health. Either route would increase the employment opportunities of an arts graduate and open up the possibility to advance to leadership roles in healthcare, if desired. Our public health courses can be studied on campus or remote, from across the world. Public Health, School of Medicine and Population Health: https://lnkd.in/eWyDj3PC
We’ve launched the city’s 10-year Fair and Healthy Plan which is designed to close the unfair gaps in length and quality of life across Sheffield. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health and Integrated Commissioning said ‘there are unfair gaps. People consistently tell me how important good health is to them and we know that these gaps don’t have to exist. We can do something about it.’ Through The Sheffield Joint Health and Wellbeing Board, the plan will focus on prioritising those in most need in the city. It highlights the need for ‘brave and compassionate leadership’, recognises that good health and wellbeing depends on many aspects of people’s lives and emphasises how important it is for people to know how they can be part of making the changes that they want to see. The plan calls for individuals and communities to be part of the work of the Board, by attending the meetings, raising questions, sharing lived experience, and giving feedback on what’s working and what needs to be improved.
