#Recycling plays a critical role in our journey towards #EcologicalTransformation, representing a key element in the circular economy paradigm. On this #WorldRecyclingDay, we would like to highlight one of our ongoing projects that aims to develop and implement a sustainable recycling plastic waste model in the Eastern Caribbean Islands. Seureca-Unite Caribbean joint venture’s collaboration with the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission, supported by the French Development Agency (AFD) under an EU grant, represents an important initiative aimed at confronting the challenges of marine litter and #wastemanagement in the context of small islands. 👉 This project focuses on creating a financially self-sustainable #plastic recycling model and demonstrating it in two selected islands. 🎯 Our collective efforts have achieved significant milestones: Dominica has started to export plastic bales for recycling, while Grenada is on the brink of inaugurating a multipurpose recycling facility, including a plastic shredder. 🗣️ In #Dominica, #Grenada and #SaintLucia, our project has also facilitated meaningful dialogues with the governments, key civil society groups and the private sector to identify sustainable financing mechanisms. These discussions have proven vital in building a resilient plastic waste management model that emphasises regional cooperation, financial sustainability, and the potential for replication in other OECS Member States. At Seureca, we are proud to lead this transformative project alongside the OECS Commission, AFD, local governments, and community partners. 💬 Discover in the comments section a documentary video on this project and a litter awareness campaign. Yesterday, BVRio participated in the International Alliance of Waste Pickers event during the #INC4, ‘The Last Frontier: Waste Pickers against Environmental Contamination from Plastic Waste’, hosted by the Governo Brasileiro - Ministério das Relações Exteriores and Fundación Avina. It brought together waste pickers and stakeholders from around the world to discuss the inclusion of waste pickers in the global treaty. Maria Accioly, BVRio circular economy specialist, said the event underscores the importance of waste pickers' involvement in shaping international environmental policies. “These events organised by the IAWP first happened at INC-3 in Nairobi, and are now a pivotal step towards including waste pickers in the Treaty’s text.” Waste pickers are essential to recycling and the circular economy, and by engaging them in global discussions, we aim to ensure their perspectives are integrated into solutions addressing plastic waste. Looking forward to participating in more discussions around social inclusion! #PlasticsTreaty #WastePickers #WasteManagement #EndPlasticPollution

At the end of Earth Month, we are reflecting on the past month of SWANA conferences, meetings, and events that advance SWANA’s goal of being a climate champion. The INC-4 showed that there is a great need for improved resource recovery and management, which our members do every day. SWANA provides members with the technical resources and information needed in their daily work to manage waste as a resource. Amy Lestition Burke, Executive Director & CEO of SWANA, shared these thoughts during the SWANA side event at the INC-4: “As I have been attending events this week, I hear the statistic that the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped in the worlds’ oceans, rivers, and lakes every day. This fact is actually on the homepage of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Plastic Pollution website. Why is it a garbage truck? Think about that. This statistic projects an image of garbage trucks and recycling trucks dumping plastic waste into the ocean. When in reality, recycling trucks are preventing plastic pollution. The waste and recycling industry is providing solutions. We are hearing about ambitious goals to improve recycling systems and recycling rates, and that can’t happen without basic waste collection. We need to move beyond a take-make-waste model to a circular economy model and we can only do that through collaboration. Together we can change that image of a recycling truck dumping plastic into the ocean and change it to an image of the recycling truck being the link to make recycled products.” #EveryDayisEarthDay #EarthDay #EarthMonth #Earth #ClimateChampions #SWANA #SolidWaste #Recycling #PlasticPollution #Pollution

Last week, on World Cleanup Day Official, we went trash fishing in the waters of Rotterdam! Around 8 to 10 million metrics tons of plastic ends up in the ocean each year and by 2050 the total amount of plastic is predicted to outweigh all the fish in the sea. With these concerning statistics we partnered up with iKapitein Boats & Bites to traverse the waters of Delfshaven fishing trash where we could. World Cleanup Day is an important day to reflect on our consumption and recycling habits. We continuously work towards improving our recycling process and reduce waste where we can. Small efforts can add up, and it was great to see our team work together to make an impact. It showed us the scale of the problem, despite just covering a small section of Rotterdam. We’re always looking for ways to make more sustainable choices and reduce waste in our everyday operations. Let’s keep doing what we can to keep Rotterdam clean.
