HEAT ILLNESS PREVENTION As temperatures rise, the likelihood of heat illness also increases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heat illness occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature. The body temperature rises, sweating stops because the body can’t cool or heat itself and mental confusion begins. Muscles may twitch and shallow breathing may make it difficult to recover. Here are some factual tips to help you and others stay safe in the heat: 1. Stay hydrated even if you don’t feel thirsty. 2. Wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing. Avoid dark colors that absorb sun rays. 3. Know the signs. Symptoms include weakness, cold and clammy skin, nausea or vomiting. If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. 4. If possible, stay indoors. By following these tips, you can reduce the risk of heat-related illness.
