Something I don't often have a chance to talk about- my thesis research in emerging technologies and disability studies. I've seen Taiwan's awareness of persons with disabilities grow over the course of my studies and in the years of advocacy that followed graduation. Yes, the stigma remains, but I am confident that efforts that help understand what it's like to live with disabilities is having a positive impact on social structures, with help from physical infrastructures and technologies that create access. We celebrated International Day of People with Disabilities at Yarra Trams with a panel discussion featuring members from our Accessibility Reference Group, sharing stories from their lives and how we can all contribute to accessibility and inclusion. Yarra Trams’ Accessibility Reference Group is vital to ensuring the work we do has a real impact for people with disabilities, providing valuable feedback for initiatives to help improve accessibility across the tram network.   As part of today’s celebration, we also launched our new Accessibility Action Plan 2024-2027. The plan outlines how we’ll work to make our tram network more inclusive for passengers of all abilities – with more training for frontline staff, events like Try Before You Ride and Get Back on Board to help passengers feel more confident travelling and providing more job opportunities for people with disabilities. Tomorrow, December 3, is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. I've written about this day on MySeveralWorlds.com for many years in Taiwan and rarely see it mentioned anywhere. I continue to celebrate it and write about it as the topic is finally starting to grow despite the fact that I've been in a wheelchair since 2009. Tomorrow I will be releasing some disability stats that showcase what is happening with #DisabilityAwareness in #Taiwan. I hope you will join me in sharing and helping to educate others. Taiwan still has a long way to go with #DisabilityRights, especially in terms of making workplaces and public amenities accessible. It might surprise you, but Taiwan is still way behind on these issues, although in the past few years I've started to see more people talking about it. (I'm encouraged... finally, but I'm still waiting to rejoin the land of living.) 2024's theme is “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable "International Day of Persons with Disabilities encourages an understanding of disability issues; the rights of persons with disabilities; and gains derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of the political, social, economic and cultural life of their communities. A disability is a condition or function judged to be significantly impaired relative to the usual standard of an individual of their group. Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities... I want to ask you to think about how accessible your organisation, workplace or service is? How is accessibility measured & who by? If I was coming to meet with you today, would I need to provide advance notice that I'm a wheelchair user? Would I be able to use the front door? ... or am I to go round the side by the bins...can I get in at all? I have to think about accessibility constantly. How I go about my everyday does not include much spontaneity, and whilst having the facility to meet online is great there is nothing quite like connecting in person. So my ask for this day is that we learn about disability, think about accessibility and work in co-production with disabled people to make the changes that will make the difference...If we are designing, developing, delivering, what does that look like for disabled people in all our incredible diversity.
