I know the value of hard work in the fields. I come from a family business, and I recognize that in Latin America, we work hard. Family farms are the backbone of rural life here, making up 84% of Brazil's farms and playing an important role in the agricultural economies of countries like Colombia, Ecuador, and Guatemala. According to a report on family farming in Latin America by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), specialized family farms are the largest group in many countries, often relying heavily on agriculture for their livelihood. For example, over 58% of family farms in Brazil derive most of their income from agriculture. In Colombia, the number of rural households involved in specialized family farming has increased significantly. Similarly, in Ecuador, family farming is predominantly concentrated in the Sierra region, where a large percentage of income still comes from agricultural activities despite the growing necessity for diversified income sources. It's fascinating how, over the years, fieldwork has remained a cornerstone of our society. Yet, it often doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves. How can we continue the good work? Succession planning is what we need to ensure that future generations continue with the legacy. As an agricultural influencer, I am thrilled to see the Food Systems Resilience Program for Eastern and Southern Africa taking shape. This comprehensive program aims to enhance the resilience of food systems, improving the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and rural communities in these regions. The Procurement Plan highlights the importance of public administration in agriculture, fishing, and forestry, as well as irrigation and drainage, agricultural extension, research, and other support services. I believe this program will have a significant impact on the agricultural sector, driving economic growth and reducing poverty. As we move forward, it is essential to prioritize the needs of small-scale farmers, ensuring they have access to the resources and support they need to thrive. Hushe Mzenda is spot on, however, I would claim that district extension officers have a capacity gap in #businessdevelopment concepts. The first step would be to capacitate them with fundamentals of why there is need for horizontal and vertical #coordination to integrate #smallholderfarmers into mainstream #valuechains. For long, #agronomic excellence skills although very critical, have characterised key skills consistent with such positions. I would go on to say this is the key reason why agricultural #producerorganisations have remained #institutionally "traditional", and have failed to take off not just in #Zimbabwe but in most emerging economies. #capacitybuilding

#VADs or Voluntary Agricultural Districts are an essential tool for ensuring the long-term protection of farm and forest land in North Carolina. These programs are a highly effective way to safeguard agricultural spaces from encroaching urban sprawl. By promoting land use policies that favor farming, VADs help preserve farmland and support agricultural communities. North Carolina, historically a great place to live and work, is experiencing significant migration, partly driven by new developments such as Walt Disney's Asteria Community, which plans to introduce over 4,000 new houses. This influx of residents can lead to increased pressure on rural lands, traffic and quality of life making the protection of agricultural spaces more crucial than ever. Varying slightly county by county here are the key features: 🏡 Protection from Non-Farm Development: VADs provide a buffer against urbanization by restricting non-farm development within designated districts. 🚜 Signage and Public Awareness: Farms in VADs can display signage indicating their participation, raising public awareness and support for agricultural preservation. 💰 Reduced Utility Assessments: Farmland within VADs is often eligible for reduced utility assessments, lowering operational costs for farmers. 💲 Eligibility for Agricultural Grants: Farmers in VADs are prioritized for various agricultural grants and funding opportunities. 🕰Commitment Period: Typically, farmers commit their land to a VAD for a three-year period and can cancel anytime. An Enhanced Voluntary Agricultural District (EVAD) is 10 years, offers more benefits, but does not allow for early cancellation. For farmers in North Carolina, enrolling in Voluntary Agricultural Districts (VADs) is a proactive step towards securing the future of their farmland. These programs not only offer significant protections and benefits but also play a vital role in preserving the agricultural landscape amidst growing development pressures. As North Carolina continues to attract new residents and developments, these conservation programs provide an essential framework for maintaining the state's agricultural identity! As we see the growth and development of agriculture globally I believe its my role to support small scale farmers with relevant information in order to drive the growth of the sector in Africa. The recent induction of Delaware farms into the Century Farm program by the Delaware Department of Agriculture has given me an insight into the importance of recognizing and preserving our agricultural heritage. The Century Farm program which requires farms to have at least 10 acres of the original parcel or gross more than $10,000 annually in agricultural sales is a great way to honor the dedication and perseverance of farmers who have been contributing to the sector for generations. This program also highlights the need for sustainable agricultural practices and the importance of supporting local farmers in our communities. I believe that similar programs can be implemented in Africa to promote and support our small-scale farmers. The #forestry and #timber industry contributes £1.1bn to Scotland's #economy and supports over 34,000 #jobs across rural Scotland. This is economic growth that also helps tackle #climatechange. Businesses have collectively invested hundreds of millions of pounds in recent years, with future #woodsupply and #treeplanting crucial to their confidence to invest. The Scottish Government is faced with making difficult budgetary decisions right now and wants to avoid causing #economic harm. The funds that support tree planting for future wood supply are a miniscule part of the budget, but they have an outsized impact on confidence and therefore investment.
