One of the biggest challenges with our community-led zoning review process is our inherantly limited perspective on change. As humans, we’re a spec of dust in time, lacking the broader context of how neighborhoods evolve. I’d love to see, a common statement like, “I raised my kids in a single-family home on this block and oppose _______,” answered by a farmer from the early 1900s who recalls raising cattle on that same block just decades earlier. Change is the only constant, yet our lives are often too short to fully appreciate its scope and impact. What are your thoughts on balancing community input with the need for change? Share your insights in the comments. #urbanplanning #communitydevelopment #zoningreform #changemanagement #perspective

As we near the end of 2024, our staff are reflecting on their favorite highlights of the year! Here’s what moved Redbudʻs Resource Specialist, Sheridan Noelani Enomoto : “A personal highlight for me this year was meeting Shae Kamakaʻala, the Director of ʻĀina Protection for Hawaiʻi Land Trust (HILT). When Shae discovered Redbudʻs Allyship Spectrum, it became a transformative tool to clarify HILT’s goals and deepen conversations with their landowner partners. With this resource, HILT could: Address historical erasure by revisiting signage at conservation easement sites, budgeting updates, and planning thoughtful implementation. Highlight impactful partnerships, such as a CE project where landowner profits flow directly back into the ecosystem: 50% into regenerative agriculture 25% to employees—80% of whom are local families 25% to the surrounding community The landowner also included a one-time donation to HILT, enabling a focus on other equitable land protection initiatives. As a Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian), it’s inspiring and empowering to see Redbud’s work uplifting and resonating with other Indigenous communities, including my own.” Photo Credit: Shae Kamakaʻala, projects of Hawaiʻi Land Trust. Transforming Communities: Growing Food, Jobs, and Hope in South Dallas 🌿 Restorative Farms aims to embody selfless community service and spearheads a collaborative coalition of community entities centered around a South Dallas agrisystem. At our Hatcher Station Training Farm, we not only cultivate food but also nurture employment opportunities, fostering agrisystem careers, improving incomes, allowing our future urban farmers the opportunity to self-evolve while giving back to the community. Our farm manager-in-training, Ray Piper, serves as an excellent example. Despite a demanding farm schedule—comprising of tasks like growing, harvesting, and organizing over 300 CSAs—Ray still managed to find time to donate 117 pounds of our excess locally grown organic greens to the Austin Street Center. We will continue to evangelize and help build a professional bioeconomy and S. Dallas agrisystem. This is how we Grow A Better Dallas 🌱🌎🌟 About the Austin Street Center: Austin Street Center, located in Dallas, Texas, provides safe shelter and meets the basic needs of the most vulnerable homeless. #Gratitude #CommunitySupport #UrbanFarming #unhomed #SustainableLiving #professionalurbanfarming #healthysoil #Texasfarmer#organicgardening #GrowABetterDallas #DallasUrbanFarming #HatcherStationTrainingFarm #communityimpact #economicimpact #HealthyEating#CommunityEmpowerment #SouthDallas #NutritionAwareness #SustainableLiving #LocalProduce #HealthyCommunities #foodjustice

Here's how we help the local communities of Malindi Ungwana Bay (Kenya) to plant mangrove trees and improve their livelihoods: 🏫 1. Education: our local partner COBEC Projects educates the local communities on the importance of protecting mangroves for their livelihoods. Community scouts are trained to work together with forest rangers to protect the forest. The locals are also trained to find mangrove seedlings and start their own #mangrove nurseries. 💰 2. Buying the seedlings: we buy the seedlings from the local communities. They use the extra money earned to send their kids to school, improve their homes or invest in their future. #socialimpact ☘ 3. Tree Planting days: COBEC organized tree planting days, involving all relevant stakeholders and governments. 📈 4. The growth and survival rate of all mangrove trees is carefully monitored and a check is done after 3, 6 and 12 months. #biodiversityrestoration #biodiversityconservation

A micro-finance initiative should empower locals to generate income by establishing organic farms, raising animals such as buffalos, cows, or goats, or starting other small businesses. For instance, we provided a micro-finance loan to a woman who had suffered a severe injury after a fall. Following her recovery, she was unable to return to farm work or engage in physically demanding tasks. Instead, she used the loan to establish a small tailoring business within the village. https://lnkd.in/dkQDxWgv #tukeenepalsamaaj #tukeenepalsociety #volunteeringinnepal #volunteeringsociety
